Missionary Sisters in Cuba Foster Women's "Solidarity and Creativity"

Havana, Cuba – On International Women's Day, the spotlight shines on the remarkable work of the Sisters of the Company of Mary in Cuba, who are tirelessly devoted to their mission of serving the most vulnerable, particularly the elderly, youth, and women. Their efforts, supported by organizations like Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), bring hope and empowerment to communities facing significant challenges.

"This is a time to share and receive hope, to look boldly to the future," affirm the religious sisters of the Company of Mary Foundation, originally from Mexico, who are working in Cuba. "Despite everything, we witness how God helps others discover themselves as loved and cherished," the sisters shared with ACN. In Havana, amidst daily hardships, they uphold a powerful belief: that a small act of love can transform everything.

Their primary work is carried out in the Diezmero neighborhood, on the outskirts of Havana, although they serve various other areas as well. In Diezmero, many families struggle with limited resources and opportunities, with many residents having migrated from other parts of Cuba.

Empowering Women Through Workshops

In various regions of Cuba where they operate, the sisters conduct training workshops that combine crafts and embroidery, attracting numerous women. These workshops are held in Esmeralda, La Filial, and Caonao. "In La Filial, the women who attend these workshops sell their creations, and they divide the money with great honesty and solidarity. They say that gathering is like therapy and that when they do the embroidery, they forget their worries," the sisters told ACN.

The training provided in these workshops, which also address topics like self-esteem, dignity, and honesty, helps women "not only grow in their self-esteem and feel increasingly worthy as women but also discover many gifts they didn't know they had," the sisters explained.

A Mission of Love and Faith

"The affection of the people and their trust in us are the greatest fruits we obtain," the sisters commented. "They are people of great faith; they spread it to us, and it fills us with joy in the God who dwells within us."

"Sharing our lives with the people in the neighborhood, greeting them every day, listening to them, and praying together makes us happy. We feel happy to share life. Sharing dreams motivates us to continue committing to this mission," the sisters concluded.
