Brazil Eyes Jorge Jesus as New National Team Manager, Willing to Pay $2.7 Million Release Clause

São Paulo, Brazil - In a bid to revitalize their struggling campaign in the FIFA World Cup South American qualifiers, the Brazilian national football team is reportedly on the verge of appointing Jorge Jesus (71) as their new head coach. Brazilian media outlet 'UOL Esporte' reported on April 9th (Korean time) that the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is prepared to pay a termination clause of €2.5 million (approximately $2.7 million USD) to secure the services of the Portuguese manager.

This move comes after the CBF dismissed Dorival Júnior on March 28th following a disappointing 4-1 home defeat to arch-rivals Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Brazil currently sits in fourth place in the ten-team South American qualifying group, raising concerns about their direct qualification for the World Cup. While leaders Argentina (31 points) have already secured their spot, Brazil (17 points) faces stiff competition from Ecuador (23 points), Uruguay (21 points), Paraguay (21 points), and Colombia (20 points).

With crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Ecuador (away on June 5th) and Paraguay (home on June 8th) looming, the CBF is accelerating its search for a new manager. While Carlo Ancelotti (66) of Real Madrid was also considered a strong candidate, the CBF has seemingly opted for Jesus, likely due to the greater ease of negotiation. Despite Ancelotti's higher profile, the urgent need to improve their qualifying prospects has seemingly necessitated a more pragmatic choice.

Jorge Jesus recently extended his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal for another year but has reportedly expressed strong interest in the Brazilian national team job. Adding to the speculation, his position at Al-Hilal appears increasingly precarious. A recent 3-1 loss to Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr on April 5th widened the gap to league leaders Al-Ittihad (62 points) to five points, while also allowing third-placed Al-Nassr (54 points) to close in. Should Al-Hilal suffer another defeat in their upcoming league match against Al-Ettifaq on April 12th, Jesus's dismissal could become a reality, potentially allowing the CBF to secure his services without paying the hefty release clause.

Meanwhile, this development could offer a potential advantage to South Korean club Gwangju FC. Gwangju is scheduled to face Al-Hilal in a single-leg quarter-final match of the 2024-2025 AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) on April 26th at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The potential change in Al-Hilal's coaching staff could impact team morale and tactics, offering Gwangju FC an opportunity to capitalize on the uncertainty.

Further Analysis:

Jorge Jesus brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the table. Known for his attacking and high-pressing style of play, he has achieved significant success at various clubs, including Benfica and Flamengo, where he notably led the latter to victory in the Copa Libertadores in 2019. His tactical acumen and demanding approach could be what the Brazilian national team needs to reignite their competitive spirit and navigate the challenging World Cup qualifiers.

However, his potential appointment also carries some risks. Adapting his tactical philosophy to the Brazilian national team, with its unique player dynamics and expectations, will be a crucial challenge. Furthermore, his sometimes-abrasive personality could lead to friction within the squad if not managed effectively.

The CBF's willingness to pay a substantial release clause underscores the urgency and pressure they are under to secure a top-tier manager capable of steering Brazil back on course. The upcoming weeks will be critical in determining whether Jorge Jesus indeed takes the helm and whether he can successfully guide the Seleção through the remainder of the World Cup qualification campaign. The football world will be watching closely to see if this experienced Portuguese manager can restore Brazil's standing as a global footballing powerhouse.
