Commemorating its 60th anniversary of independence, the Singaporean government has officially issued the 'SG60 Voucher' (gift certificate), offering exceptional benefits to all its citizens. This initiative is part of the 'SG60 Package' announced during the 2025 government budget, aiming to express gratitude to all Singaporean citizens who have contributed to national development and to revitalize the local economy.
Under this SG60 Voucher distribution policy, all citizens aged 21 and above will receive a minimum of S600(approximately640,000KRW)invouchers,whileseniorsaged60andabovewillreceiveS800 (approximately 850,000 KRW). The first application phase began on July 1st for seniors aged 60 and over through the official website, and citizens aged 21 to 59 can apply starting July 22nd. Over 3 million adult citizens are expected to benefit, and the government estimates an investment of approximately S$2.02 billion (approximately 2.1544 trillion KRW).
In particular, the Singaporean government has issued specially designed postcards to help seniors easily apply for the vouchers. These postcards feature watercolor-style illustrations of Singapore's key architectural landmarks and distinctive landscapes, with a QR code printed on the back, allowing recipients to conveniently apply for the SG60 Voucher. Several artists participated in the design of these postcards, which also include a message from Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
The SG60 Vouchers can be used from the date of issue until the end of next year, and their use is primarily encouraged in neighborhood businesses, such as hawkers. Furthermore, up to half of the total voucher amount can be used at franchise supermarkets, enhancing convenience for citizens. Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized, "The SG60 Vouchers are a way of acknowledging the contributions of all Singaporeans in our nation-building journey." Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth and Trade and Industry, also stated in a briefing on June 25th that "the SG60 Vouchers will help alleviate cost of living pressures for Singaporeans."
Some critics argue that this large-scale voucher distribution is a 'pork barrel policy' ahead of the general election expected before November. However, the government has made it clear that this policy has distinct goals of economic revitalization and improving citizen welfare.
Singapore's issuance of the SG60 Vouchers is viewed as an example of the government's commitment to simultaneously pursuing national unity and economic vitality. By achieving the dual objectives of alleviating citizens' cost of living burden and supporting small businesses, it is expected to make Singapore's 60th anniversary of independence a meaningful celebration.
