Singapore Sets Standard for Electric Vessel Charging in Green Port Push

SINGAPORE - In a significant stride towards decarbonizing its maritime sector, Singapore has unveiled a new technical reference aimed at standardizing the charging infrastructure for electric harbor vessels. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), in collaboration with the Singapore Standards Council (SSC), announced the release of Technical Reference (TR) 136, a comprehensive guideline designed to ensure the safe and efficient development of charging and battery swapping systems for electric vessels operating within Singapore's port.

TR 136 places a strong emphasis on both safety and interoperability. The guidelines meticulously detail safety protocols to safeguard personnel and assets from electrical and mechanical hazards during the installation and operation of charging systems. Furthermore, it establishes crucial technical requirements to foster seamless interaction between different charging and battery swapping systems offered by various service providers. This move is expected to enhance user convenience and spur innovation within the burgeoning electric maritime transport industry.

A key aspect of TR 136 is its alignment with established industry standards for electric vehicle charging, including the widely adopted Combo Charging System. The new reference also maintains consistency with Singapore's existing electrical regulations (TR 25) and relevant international standards such as IEC 61851 and IEC 62840. This strategic harmonization is intended to facilitate easier adoption of the standard by service providers and accelerate its widespread implementation.

The MPA anticipates that the establishment of these clear standards will significantly boost user confidence in electric vessel charging and battery swapping services. This increased trust is expected to provide greater assurance to ship owners, port operators, and charging infrastructure providers regarding the safe and reliable operation of electric harbor craft.

Beyond enhancing confidence, the introduction of TR 136 is projected to unlock new business opportunities in areas related to charging technology, battery innovation, and the development of supporting infrastructure. The MPA also foresees a positive impact on the skills development of maritime professionals as the industry transitions towards greener technologies.

This latest initiative underscores Singapore's commitment to building a sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime ecosystem. By proactively establishing standards for electric vessel charging infrastructure, Singapore is positioning itself as a leader in the global effort to decarbonize the shipping industry and create greener ports for the future.
