Tanzania Triumphs: Standard Gauge Railway Transforms Nation

Dar es Salaam, December 31, 2024 - As 2024 draws to a close, Tanzania celebrates a momentous achievement: the completion and launch of its ambitious Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project. This landmark infrastructure development marks a pivotal moment in the nation's history, connecting its past with a future of progress and prosperity.

The SGR project, a vision shared by three Tanzanian presidents – Jakaya Kikwete, John Magufuli, and Samia Suluhu Hassan – has been years in the making. President Kikwete initiated feasibility studies, while President Magufuli spearheaded its execution, laying the foundation stone in 2017.

The collaboration of Turkish and Portuguese firms brought the project to life, envisioning a 1,457-kilometer railway connecting Dar es Salaam to Lake Victoria.

Key Milestones:

Phase 1: Dar es Salaam to Morogoro: The launch of this phase in mid-June 2024 ushered in a new era of fast, reliable, and affordable transport. Travel time between the two cities was dramatically reduced, transforming the commuting experience for residents.
Phase 2: Dar es Salaam to Dodoma: Inaugurated by President Hassan in August 2024, this phase significantly reduced travel time between the capital and the commercial hub, boosting economic activity and connectivity.
EMU Train Service: The launch of the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train service in November 2024 further enhanced passenger transport, with daily ridership reaching 9,000 to 10,000.

Impact on Communities:

The SGR is already transforming lives across Tanzania. Communities along the railway route are experiencing increased economic opportunities, with improved access to markets and resources for traders, farmers, and entrepreneurs.

Looking Ahead:

The completed phases represent just the beginning. The SGR project aims to connect Dar es Salaam to Mwanza and beyond, creating a modern rail network that will enhance Tanzania's position as a regional trade hub.

The government has committed significant investment to this ambitious vision, with a planned expenditure of 23.3 trillion Tanzanian shillings over five years. As 2025 begins, Tanzania stands poised to reap the full benefits of this transformative infrastructure project, ushering in an era of sustained economic growth and development.
