TORONTO — Hyundai Motor Group has once again proven its formidable presence in the North American market, capturing two of the most coveted titles at the 2026 Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) awards. During the opening of the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto on February 13, the Hyundai Palisade and Kia EV9 were officially crowned winners in their respective utility categories.

A Double Victory in a Competitive Field
The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), comprised of 53 leading automotive experts, announced that the Hyundai Palisade won the "2026 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year," while the Kia EV9 took home the "2026 Canadian Electric Utility Vehicle of the Year" award.

This year’s evaluation was particularly stringent, with jurors testing vehicles on real-world Canadian roads to assess performance, safety, and value. The Palisade’s victory is largely attributed to its new next-generation hybrid powertrain. Jurors noted that the vehicle provides an "ideal balance of power and efficiency," making it a perfect fit for Canadian families who prioritize both environmental consciousness and long-distance hauling capability.

On the electric front, the Kia EV9 was hailed as the "undisputed king of three-row EVs." Critics were impressed by its bold design and the raw power of its GT trim, which delivers over 500 horsepower. "The EV9 offers a combination of space, price, and technology that few competitors can match," the AJAC jury stated.

Building a "Dynasty" in Canada
This latest achievement marks the fourth consecutive year that Hyundai Motor Group has won at least two categories at the CCOTY awards. Even more impressive is the group’s grip on the "Utility Vehicle of the Year" title. Starting with the Genesis GV80 in 2021, the group has won this category five times in the last six years, missing out only in 2024.

Local Canadian media have begun describing the group's success as the "Establishment of a Korean SUV Dynasty." This streak highlights how Hyundai and Kia have successfully transitioned from being perceived as "value brands" to becoming "quality and innovation leaders" in the eyes of North American consumers.

Future Mobility Leadership
The success in Canada follows the Palisade’s recent triumph at the 2026 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) awards, where it scored 270 points—more than double that of its closest competitor.

"Sweeping two major categories in Canada is a testament to our commitment to innovation in the future mobility space," said a representative from Hyundai Motor Group. "We will continue to focus our engineering and safety resources on delivering top-tier quality that meets the evolving needs of our global customers."

As the automotive industry shifts toward electrification and hybridization, Hyundai Motor Group's ability to dominate both internal combustion and electric categories suggests they are well-positioned to lead the market for years to come.
