SEOUL/SAN JOSE – SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won has concluded a high-stakes marathon of meetings with the leaders of the world’s most influential Big Tech companies, signaling a strategic shift for SK from a hardware supplier to a comprehensive "Total AI Solution" provider.
Throughout early October, Chairman Choi visited Silicon Valley to secure long-term partnerships for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and explore collaborative frontiers in AI infrastructure. The series of meetings included sit-downs with the CEOs of Nvidia, Meta, Google, Microsoft, and Broadcom, marking an unprecedented level of direct diplomatic engagement by the SK chief.
The 'Chicken Meeting' and Next-Gen HBM
The tour began with a symbolic and strategic "chicken and beer" meeting on October 5th at a Korean-style pub in Santa Clara. Choi met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to discuss the roadmap for HBM4. Industry insiders suggest the conversation centered on supplying 288GB HBM4 modules for Nvidia’s upcoming AI accelerator, "Vera Rubin," scheduled for release later this year.
Expanding the Architecture with Broadcom and Meta
Following the Nvidia meeting, Choi visited Broadcom CEO Hock Tan in San Jose. As Broadcom leads the market in custom ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) design, the two leaders discussed integrating SK’s HBM into Broadcom’s next-generation AI accelerators, such as the Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) developed for firms like Google.
The momentum continued on October 10th with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Beyond discussing long-term supply chains for enterprise SSDs and server DRAM, the two explored "customized HBM" optimized specifically for Meta’s internal AI projects. Interestingly, the talks branched into wearable tech, discussing how SK’s low-power DRAM could enhance Meta’s AI Glasses.
Vision: From Chipmaker to Total AI Solution Provider
The final legs of the trip included meetings with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. While the primary focus remained on securing a stable supply of AI memory, the underlying theme of the entire tour was SK’s evolution.
SK Group is positioning itself as a "one-stop shop" for the AI era. This strategy involves:
HBM Leadership: Maintaining the dominant lead over rivals Samsung and Micron.
Data Center Integration: Offering design and construction services for AI data centers.
The Rise of Solidigm: SK’s U.S. NAND subsidiary, Solidigm, is expected to be rebranded and restructured as a core "AI Company" to spearhead the group’s storage-focused AI investments.
Why This Matters Now
The decision to publicize these high-level meetings is seen as a tactical move. As the "HBM War" intensifies, SK is signaling to the market that its relationship with "Big Tech" transcends simple vendor-buyer dynamics. By aligning its R&D roadmap directly with the architectural needs of Nvidia and Meta, SK aims to create an ecosystem where its hardware is inseparable from the software giants' progress.
"Chairman Choi is painting a future where SK is a 'Total AI Solution Provider,'" an SK Hynix official stated. "We aren't just selling chips; we are co-creating the infrastructure of the AI revolution."
