The North Korean Under-17 (U-17) national football team concluded its journey in the 2025 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-17 Championship at the semi-final stage. Despite the team's exit, their captain, Kim Yu-jin, garnered significant attention, notably expressing his aspirations to play in Europe.
The AFC notably featured two exclusive interviews with Kim Yu-jin on its official website during the tournament, an uncommon occurrence for North Korean athletes. Typically, North Korean players participating in international competitions, including the Olympics, are known to decline interviews with both South Korean and international media in the mixed zones.
Kim Myung-wook, a Japan-based freelance sports journalist of Korean descent, highlighted the rarity of these interviews in an article titled "Super Rare Interview" on Yahoo Japan. He expressed surprise at seeing candid interviews with a North Korean national team player on the AFC's official site, noting that North Korean athletes usually ignore interview requests at international events. Kim Myung-wook suggested that the AFC, recognizing Kim Yu-jin's talent, proactively sought interviews with him throughout the tournament. He further emphasized the unusual nature of a North Korean player appearing so publicly and commendably responding to questions.
According to the interviews, Kim Yu-jin began playing football at the age of eight. He was scouted by his elementary school's football coach shortly after enrolling. Describing his playing style, Kim Yu-jin stated, "I am a fairly fast player, and this is why the striker position suits me well. Speed and stamina are my strengths."
Throughout the AFC U-17 Championship, Kim Yu-jin maintained that winning the tournament was his primary objective. He highlighted the team's dominant 6-0 victory against Indonesia in the quarterfinals, affirming, "Our team will give our best effort until the very end and will win no matter what." He also drew inspiration from the achievements of the North Korean women's national teams, stating, "The fact that our female football players created a football legend last year with their excellent performances greatly encouraged us." In the preceding year, North Korea had remarkably won both the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup and the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
However, Kim Yu-jin also reflected on his personal performance, admitting that he had not yet met his own standards as a striker. "I scored five goals in the preliminary matches, but perhaps due to being overly eager, I have only scored two goals so far [in the main tournament]," he said. "I will work tirelessly to achieve better results in future matches."
Looking towards his long-term aspirations, Kim Yu-jin expressed a strong desire to succeed on the international stage. "I need to train harder and achieve outstanding results," he stated. "If I do so, I will be able to play not only for the national team but also in the professional leagues of top European football nations." He also considered his post-playing career, mentioning, "I haven't thought much about what I will do after my playing career ends, but I also have the idea of becoming a coach who nurtures excellent football players." Demonstrating his commitment, he concluded by saying, "I will definitely win for my parents and the people," while clenching his fist.
In connection with Kim Yu-jin's European ambitions, Kim Myung-wook noted, "North Korean players also watch the UEFA Champions League and World Cup matches and are well-informed about European players. In the past, Han Kwang-song also played in Italy's Serie A for Cagliari and Juventus." 1 This historical precedent indicates that European clubs have previously shown interest in North Korean talent.
By reaching the semi-finals of the AFC U-17 Championship, North Korea secured a qualification spot for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Kim Myung-wook commented on the prospects of North Korean players in the international transfer market, stating, "Although North Korean players are susceptible to the influence of international politics, there will certainly be clubs that want to sign talented players depending on the circumstances. I hope that Kim Yu-jin will put on a good performance at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar this November, to the extent that overseas scouts will want to acquire him."
The emergence of Kim Yu-jin and his public expression of European ambitions mark a notable shift in the typically reserved approach of North Korean athletes in international sports. His talent, coupled with the rare exposure provided by the AFC, has positioned him as a player to watch, particularly in the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup, where his performance could indeed attract the attention of European clubs seeking promising young talents. The football world will be keenly observing Kim Yu-jin's progress and whether his aspirations to play in Europe will materialize, potentially opening doors for other talented North Korean footballers on the global stage.
