YESAN, SOUTH KOREA  – Kim Tae-heum, the Governor of Chungcheongnam-do Province, expressed his hope that the annual ‘Yesan Yun Bong-gil National Marathon’ would serve as a meaningful occasion for participants to remember and honor the life and enduring spirit of the esteemed Korean independence activist, Yun Bong-gil.

Governor Kim attended the 21st edition of the prestigious marathon, held on April 6th around the scenic Yesan Public Stadium. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd of runners and their families, Governor Kim emphasized the deep connection between the event's location and the revered patriot. “Maeheon Yun Bong-gil, whose pen name was Maeheon, was born and raised in this very region of Yesan. It was here that his profound patriotism and unwavering sense of duty were nurtured,” Governor Kim stated. “As you run through the beautiful ‘Spring of Yesan’ today, I sincerely hope you will take this opportunity to deeply reflect on his remarkable life and the powerful spirit he embodied.”

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, Governor Kim highlighted the picturesque timing of the event. “Coinciding with the peak of the cherry blossom season this week, the marathon course is renowned as a national hotspot for its breathtaking cherry blossom scenery,” he noted. “To all the marathoners who have joined us from across the nation, I extend my heartfelt wishes that your paths ahead will be as beautiful and filled with promise as the flower-lined routes you traverse today.”

The well-attended event was a collaborative effort, hosted by the Yesan County Sports Council and the prominent regional newspaper, Joongdo Ilbo. The gathering drew an impressive crowd of approximately 5,000 individuals, including Governor Kim, Yesan County Mayor Choi Jae-gu, participating athletes, and their supportive families and friends.

The runners, ranging from seasoned marathoners to enthusiastic amateurs, competed across three distinct courses: the challenging half marathon, the competitive 10-kilometer race, and the accessible 5-kilometer fun run. The event provided a platform for participants to showcase their dedication and athletic prowess amidst the stunning backdrop of Yesan’s spring landscape.

Background on Yun Bong-gil:

Yun Bong-gil (1908-1932) was a significant figure in the Korean independence movement against Japanese colonial rule. Born in Yesan, Chungcheongnam-do, he became known for his courageous acts of resistance. In 1932, at a commemoration ceremony in Shanghai celebrating Japan's victory in the First Sino-Japanese War, Yun threw a bomb at high-ranking Japanese officials. This bold act resonated deeply with Koreans and garnered international attention, highlighting the Korean people's unwavering determination for independence. Despite his capture and subsequent execution at a young age, Yun Bong-gil remains a national hero in South Korea, symbolizing patriotism and sacrifice. Events like the Yesan marathon serve as important reminders of his legacy and the sacrifices made by independence activists during a tumultuous period in Korean history. The marathon not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters a sense of national pride and remembrance within the community.
