Busan, South Korea – The South Korean government and local governments of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam have joined forces to build a new international airport on Gadukdo Island, aiming to revitalize the southern region and establish a global logistics hub.

In a significant step towards this goal, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the city governments of Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, and the Gadukdo New Airport Construction Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding on December 20. The MOU outlines a comprehensive plan for the construction and operation of the new airport, emphasizing its role in driving economic growth and creating a more balanced regional development.

Key points of the agreement include:

Accelerated Construction: The project will be fast-tracked to ensure timely completion.
Expanded International Network: The new airport will be connected to a robust international air network to attract more airlines and passengers.
Logistics Hub: The airport will be integrated with nearby seaports to create a world-class logistics hub.
Regional Development: The airport will serve as a catalyst for regional development, including the construction of new cities, the expansion of tourism, and the improvement of infrastructure.
To ensure smooth implementation and foster collaboration among various stakeholders, a "Gadukdo New Airport Governance Council" will be established. This council will play a crucial role in addressing challenges and identifying opportunities for maximizing the airport's impact.

Government Support

The South Korean government is committed to providing robust support for the project. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to allocate substantial resources and expedite the approval process. Additionally, the government will work to expand international air routes and support the development of regional airlines to boost connectivity.

Regional Impact

The new airport is expected to have a significant impact on the regional economy. It will create numerous jobs, attract foreign investment, and stimulate tourism. Moreover, the integration of the airport with the existing port infrastructure will strengthen South Korea's position as a global logistics hub.

Quotes from Officials

"The Gadukdo New Airport is a key project that will help to reduce the transportation gap with the Seoul metropolitan area, build a mega-region, and promote balanced national development," said Park Sang-woo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. "We will ensure that the airport opens on time while maintaining the highest level of service and safety."

"The combination of the Gadukdo New Airport and Busan's world-class port will create a powerful new logistics hub," said Kang Do-hyeong, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries. "We will work together to maximize the synergy between the port and the airport."

Conclusion

The construction of the Gadukdo New Airport marks a significant milestone in South Korea's efforts to strengthen its regional economy and enhance its global competitiveness. With the support of the government and local communities, the project is expected to transform the southern region of the country.
