DAEJEON, SOUTH KOREA – The Daejeon City Museum has announced the launch of an exciting and educational program titled ‘2025 Discover Local Cultural Heritage – Cultural Heritage from Textbooks,’ commencing this April. This initiative, a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Gongju National Museum and involving a network of 12 public museums across Daejeon, Sejong, and South Chungcheong Province, aims to bring local history and culture to life for elementary school students.
The program’s unique approach centers on the region’s significant cultural heritage sites that are specifically featured in the 3rd-grade local studies curriculum. This direct connection to classroom learning provides a tangible and engaging way for young learners to deepen their understanding of their local history and cultural identity.
Participants will begin their adventure at the Daejeon City Museum, where they will receive an interactive activity sheet. This sheet will guide them on a journey to explore key cultural landmarks within Daejeon, including the ancient Dunsan Prehistoric Site, offering insights into the region’s early inhabitants, and the historically significant Dongchundang Historic House, showcasing traditional Korean architecture and the life of a renowned Joseon Dynasty scholar. At each location, students will engage in fun and educational quizzes and missions designed to enhance their learning experience. Successful completion of these tasks will earn them a special stamp as a reward for their exploration.
Adding an element of regional discovery, the program encourages participants to venture beyond Daejeon. By collecting a total of three stamps from any of the participating museums in the Daejeon, Sejong, and South Chungcheong region, including institutions in neighboring areas like Sejong City and Geumsan County, students can claim a 기념품 (souvenir) at the final museum they visit. This multi-site exploration fosters an appreciation for the interconnectedness of the region’s cultural heritage.
Furthermore, the ‘Cultural Heritage from Textbooks’ program extends an invitation to explore even wider. Participants have the opportunity to engage with programs offered by museums in other designated zones within the collaborative network. This provides a valuable chance to discover the cultural treasures of neighboring communities and to draw comparisons and contrasts with their own local heritage, broadening their understanding of the broader regional context. For those particularly enthusiastic cultural explorers who manage to complete the missions at all 11 participating institutions, a special, more significant gift awaits them at the Gongju National Museum, the central coordinating body of this enriching initiative.
Detailed information regarding how to participate, a comprehensive list of participating institutions, and program specifics can be found on the official notice board of the Daejeon City Museum’s website (please refer to the Daejeon City Museum’s official website for the most up-to-date information). Interested participants are encouraged to act quickly, as the program will continue only while supplies last, with a limited number of 300 기념품 available on a first-come, first-served basis. This program offers a fantastic opportunity for young students to step out of the classroom and into the rich tapestry of their local and regional cultural heritage, making learning an exciting and memorable adventure.
