Daegu, South Korea – The World Orchestra Festival, a premier classical music event representing Daegu as a UNESCO City of Music, is set to commence its 60-day run on September 19. This year's festival, themed "Diversity," promises an extensive array of musical experiences, featuring top-tier orchestras and emerging artists from both Korea and abroad.

Global Reach and Celebratory Engagements

A highlight of this year's festival is the Daegu City Symphony Orchestra's "World Orchestra Festival in Japan" tour. Scheduled to perform in Hiroshima, Osaka, and Fukuoka, this tour aims to elevate Daegu's musical standing on the international stage. The tour's opening performance at the Daegu Concert House on September 19 will serve as a preview of these highly anticipated Japanese concerts. Led by Daegu City Symphony Orchestra's conductor, Baek Jin-hyun, the preview will feature pianist Miyuji Kaneko. This special tour also commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, as well as the 28th anniversary of Daegu and Hiroshima's sister-city relationship.

A Stellar Lineup of International Orchestras

Following the Daegu City Symphony Orchestra's opening, the festival will host a series of performances by world-renowned European orchestras.

On September 28, the Belgian National Orchestra, celebrated for its collaboration with the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition, will perform with pianist Paik Hye-sun.

Next, on October 23, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, a distinguished ensemble from Hamburg, Germany, will take the stage with internationally acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell. Their program includes Brahms' Violin Concerto and Anna Clyne's The Sounding Sea.

The festival will also welcome the Slovenian Philharmonic, an orchestra with over 300 years of history, on November 19. They will present a blend of traditional and contemporary works with pianist Son Min-soo.

Further enriching the international roster are:

The Jiaxing Daqiao Philharmonic Orchestra (October 29), based in the historic Chinese city of Jiaxing.
The Symphony Hall Super Brass (November 8), a leading wind ensemble from Osaka, Japan.
The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra (November 9), known for its distinct Nordic lyricism and transparent sound.

Domestic Excellence and Emerging Talent

Beyond the international ensembles, the festival will showcase prominent Korean orchestras and talented young musicians. The DCH Virtuosos, an ensemble founded by the Daegu Concert House, will perform with pianist Kim Jung-won on November 1. The KBS Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with emerging violinist Randall Goosby on October 18.

In total, the World Orchestra Festival will present 18 diverse performances over 60 days, concluding on November 19. This extensive program underscores the festival's commitment to showcasing a wide spectrum of musical talent and enriching Daegu's cultural landscape.

Festival Details and Ticketing Information

While specific ticketing details and venues for all 18 performances are not fully provided in the initial press release, general information can be found on the Daegu Concert House website. Previous iterations of the World Orchestra Festival have utilized various venues across Daegu, with the Daegu Concert House serving as a primary location.

The festival aims to attract a diverse audience, from seasoned classical music enthusiasts to those new to orchestral performances. Educational programs and outreach initiatives are often part of the festival's broader mission to foster a deeper appreciation for classical music within the community.

Looking Ahead

The World Orchestra Festival continues to solidify Daegu's reputation as a vibrant cultural hub and a significant center for classical music. Its emphasis on diversity, international collaboration, and the nurturing of new talent ensures its continued relevance and appeal on both a national and global scale. This year's expanded program and international tours highlight the festival's growing ambition and its role in promoting cultural exchange through music.
