Daejeon Pioneers Future-Focused Education with Innovative Reading Academy

Daejeon, SOUTH KOREA – Daejeon, designated as an Education Development Special Zone, is taking proactive steps to cultivate future talent with the official launch of its "Future Industry Career Exploration Reading Academy." This ambitious initiative, commencing this month and running through June, aims to ignite interest in burgeoning industries among elementary and middle school students while simultaneously bolstering their literacy skills.

The academy, hosted across 17 libraries throughout the city, including the prominent Hanbat Library, has garnered significant early enthusiasm. Targeting students in elementary and middle school, the program strategically selects literature centered around pivotal next-generation strategic industries. These include the captivating realms of space exploration, the cutting-edge field of robotics, and the transformative advancements in biotechnology. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed not only to impart knowledge but also to provide tangible career exploration opportunities for young learners.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. With a cap of 15 students per library on a first-come, first-served basis, the 47 available programs have attracted a remarkable 741 participants. The popularity of the academy is underscored by the fact that several libraries reached full capacity and had to close registration ahead of schedule.

Beyond simply reading, the academy emphasizes experiential learning. Each participating library has integrated hands-on activities that directly correlate with the chosen books. For instance, the Gao Library, situated in Panam-dong, Dong-gu, has organized an enriching field trip to the National Science Museum slated for May 18th. Meanwhile, the Gujeuk Library in Songgang-dong, Yuseong-gu, is set to host a series of engaging special lectures featuring acclaimed authors, kicking off with an interactive session with writer Hong Min-jeong today, April 5th.

A particularly noteworthy aspect of the initiative is the Rainbow Library in Panam-dong, Dong-gu. Since its reopening as an English-language focused library in 2021, it is uniquely positioned to offer specialized programs. Recognizing the financial pressures of private education, the Rainbow Library is conducting two distinct English reading academies tailored for elementary students in grades 1-2 and 3-6, respectively. This targeted approach aims to enhance English literacy while exploring future industry themes.

The current phase of the reading academy will continue through June. Following the summer break, the city plans to open registration for the second half of the program, indicating a sustained commitment to this educational endeavor.

Koh Hyun-deok, the Director-General of Daejeon City's Education Policy and Strategy Bureau, expressed his appreciation for the strong public interest. "We are deeply grateful for the enthusiastic response from our citizens towards the Reading Academy," he stated. "We are committed to continuously supporting this program, ensuring it evolves beyond traditional reading groups to offer an even more impactful experience that genuinely aids young people in exploring potential career paths and fostering a lifelong love for reading."

This innovative "Future Industry Career Exploration Reading Academy" underscores Daejeon's dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators within its Education Development Special Zone. By seamlessly blending literacy development with exposure to cutting-edge industries, Daejeon is setting a compelling example for fostering future-ready skills in its youth.
