In a historic milestone for Paraguay, the department of Alto Paraná will host the first edition of the Hot Air Balloon World Championship, an event that promises to position the country as a tourist and cultural destination of international relevance in this field. This festival, organized by the Latin America International Balloon Festival, will feature the participation of 30 competitors from more than 20 countries.
A Unique Event in Paraguay
The Governor of Alto Paraná, César Landy Torres, received a delegation last Saturday, May 2nd, headed by Steve Kim, a renowned international pilot, and Hyo Jong Kim (Víctor Kim), president of the organizing committee with a distinguished track record in organizing international events. During the meeting, the details of the event and its positive impact on Paraguay's economy and international projection were discussed. The governor expressed his enthusiasm and commitment, declaring his full support to ensure the success of this first edition.
Economic and Cultural Impact
The Hot Air Balloon World Championship will not only be a sporting competition but also a cultural celebration that will include performances by local and K-Pop artists, as well as a gastronomic fair featuring Korean and local flavors. According to Steve Kim, this type of event attracts thousands of visitors, promoting tourism and boosting the local economy.
In addition, the festival will offer unique experiences to attendees, who will be able to enjoy hot air balloon rides with experienced pilots. Training sessions will also be held for those interested in professionalizing in this discipline, with the aim of representing Paraguay in future international competitions.
Paraguay as an Ideal Destination
Originally planned to take place in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, the event was moved to Paraguay thanks to the efforts of Dr. Gilson Dantas Carmini, president of Prensa Mercosur. According to Carmini, Alto Paraná offers significant advantages such as more accessible air permits and a natural environment that includes wonders like the Monday Falls and Itaipu Dam, ideal for visitor sightseeing.
The maximum altitude of the hot air balloons will not exceed 150 meters, which ensures that it will not interfere with local airspace, a key advantage over the restrictions in Brazil due to tourist air traffic over the Iguazu Falls.
International Projection and Local Benefits
The festival will not only be a visual and cultural spectacle but also an opportunity to position Paraguay on the international map. Each participant will arrive accompanied by their press team, which will guarantee broad media coverage in various countries. According to the organizing committee, this event will contribute to strengthening the positive image of the country, increasing the value of local brands, and fostering a vibrant and connected community.
Key benefits for the host city include local economic activation, growth of cultural tourism, creation of new business opportunities, and strengthening of community pride.
Preparations Underway
The organizers have already begun an intense schedule of meetings with key institutions such as the National Tourism Secretariat (Senatur), the Korean Embassy, and the Guarani Airport Directorate. Korean companies will also join as sponsors of the event, which promises to attract visitors not only to Paraguay but also to the neighboring regions of Brazil and Argentina.
For its part, Prensa Mercosur will be the official media outlet of the festival and will soon launch promotional raffles in collaboration with associated radio stations and newspapers with free tickets to fly and backstage photos with Korean artists who are currently international trends.
The Beginning of an Annual Tradition
The Hot Air Balloon World Championship is projected as an annual event that will officially begin in 2025 under the name "Yguazú International Hot Air Balloon Festival." This initiative seeks not only to create an immediate impact on the local economy but also to establish a solid foundation for Paraguay to be recognized as a benchmark in this discipline globally, with the number of participants and national and international artists increasing in future editions.
