Gokseong Melon, a representative specialty product of Gokseong County, Jeollanam-do, is embarking on its first overseas export this year, signaling a full-fledged entry into the global market. The first shipment of 6.5 tons (800 boxes) of melon, which completed its initial出荷 last month, was sent to Singapore. Starting with this, Gokseong County aims to expand exports to other Asian markets, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Malaysia, with a goal of achieving a total export volume of 80 tons this year.

Gokseong Melon's overseas expansion holds significant meaning beyond simple agricultural product export, as it elevates the status of K-Melon. Attention is focused on whether Gokseong Melon, already recognized as a "premium fruit" domestically for its excellent quality and sweetness, can also captivate global palates.

A Masterpiece Forged by Nature: The Special Qualities of Gokseong Melon Gokseong is a region with an optimal natural environment for melon cultivation. The large daily temperature range and abundant sunshine play a crucial role in increasing the melon's sweetness. Additionally, the high organic matter content in the soil further enriches the melon's taste and aroma. Thanks to these geographical and climatic advantages, despite accounting for approximately 13% of the nation's total melon production, Gokseong Melon is consistently considered the best in terms of quality and is greatly loved by consumers.

Melons contain over 90% water, making them excellent for quenching thirst, and are rich in various nutrients such as Vitamin C, potassium, and beta-carotene. Gokseong Melon, in particular, is renowned among gourmets not only for its high sweetness but also for its crisp texture and rich aroma. Domestically, it is primarily found in department stores or high-end fruit specialty stores, and its value is so recognized that it is sold as a premium fruit even in general supermarkets.

Continuous Efforts for Premium Brand Development Gokseong County and local farmers have made diverse efforts to foster Gokseong Melon as a premium brand. The establishment of a joint sorting system is a prime example. This system involves strictly selecting melons according to rigorous standards to maintain consistent quality and provide consumers with the best possible melons. Furthermore, by supporting packaging materials and logistics costs, they are continuously expanding distribution and logistics infrastructure, enhancing efficiency throughout the entire process from production to consumption.

The culmination of these efforts led to the remarkable achievement of Gokseong Melon being the first melon crop nationwide to be registered under the Geographical Indication System in 2022. The Geographical Indication System is a scheme that protects the name of a specific region if its reputation, quality, or characteristics are essentially attributable to the geographical environment or human activities of that region. The registration of Gokseong Melon under the Geographical Indication System signifies that the excellence and uniqueness of Gokseong Melon have been nationally recognized. This will further build consumer trust and serve as an important stepping stone to enhance Gokseong Melon's competitiveness in overseas markets.

The Future of K-Agricultural Products Expanding Globally An official from Gokseong County emphasized, "Gokseong Melon is a premium fruit nurtured by nature, heading to the world through the dedication of farmers and administrative support," adding that they will continue to lead stable income generation for farmers and revitalize the local economy through expanded exports.

The overseas export of Gokseong Melon is expected to promote the excellence of domestic agricultural products to the world and enhance the brand value of K-agricultural products. Furthermore, this will positively impact farmers' income growth and regional economic revitalization. The case of Gokseong Melon, which strives to produce high-quality agricultural products, establishes systematic distribution and marketing strategies, and actively pioneers overseas markets, is expected to serve as a good example for other local agricultural products seeking international expansion.

Moving forward, anticipation is high for Gokseong Melon to establish itself as a truly global premium fruit that captivates palates worldwide, leading the takeoff of K-Melon.
