High-Risk Expectant Mother with Ruptured Amniotic Sac Transported Safely via Fire Helicopter

Distance of roughly 240km from Pyeongtaek to Changwon... Transported in just 1 hour, cutting down a 4-hour road journey.

The Chungnam Fire Headquarters announced on the 15th that they urgently transported a high-risk expectant mother—whose amniotic sac had ruptured on the 8th—from Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, to a university hospital in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, utilizing a fire helicopter.

The mother was suffering from gestational diabetes, and the fetus was in a breech position (positioned feet or buttocks first), making prompt medical intervention critical.

At around 4 a.m. that day, emergency medical services (EMS) responded to the report and transported the mother to an OB-GYN clinic in Pyeongtaek. However, the hospital was unable to provide the necessary specialized care, requiring them to search for another medical institution.

After scrambling to find a hospital capable of treating her, nearby medical institutions were also unable to accept her. With the mother’s health condition deteriorating, a rapid transfer became an urgent necessity.

Fortunately, a hospital capable of handling the case was found, but it turned out to be a university hospital located in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province—approximately 240 kilometers away.

Traveling by ambulance would have taken about 4 hours, posing significant risks for a long-distance road transport given the mother's critical condition.

In response, the Chungnam Fire Headquarters 119 General Dispatch Center and the Chungnam 119 Aviation Team decided to deploy a fire helicopter to urgently airlift the mother to the university hospital in Changwon.

After a flight of about 1 hour, the fire helicopter successfully transported the mother to the hospital, where she was safely handed over to the medical staff.

An official from the Chungnam Fire Headquarters stated, "For high-risk expectant mothers, rapid transport and the selection of an appropriate medical institution are of the utmost importance. Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen cooperation systems with medical institutions and actively utilize our aviation transport system to ensure emergency patients receive timely treatment."
