A major investment scam has recently shaken the public, highlighting the persistent dangers of fraudulent schemes disguised as lucrative financial opportunities. The Wansan Police Station in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, is currently investigating a gold exchange operator in her 40s, identified by her surname A, under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes. She is accused of defrauding multiple victims of billions of won by promising high returns through gold trading.
According to police investigations, operator A lured investors by claiming, "If you entrust me with your money, I will purchase gold when market prices are low, sell it at a higher price, and return substantial profit margins to you." Trusting her position as an established physical gold exchange operator, a total of 14 victims handed over approximately 2.7 billion won (around 2 million USD).
The scheme initially operated smoothly to build trust. During the early stages of the operation, A managed to pay out regular returns and promised profits to her investors. However, this facade began to crumble in February, when she stopped delivering the agreed-upon amounts. Investigators uncovered that A had been running a classic Ponzi scheme, or a "round-robin" payout method, using funds obtained from new investors to pay off earlier participants.
As the investigation deepened, law enforcement authorities took swift action. Back in July, the police executed search and seizure warrants on A’s private residence and business office to secure crucial financial records, transaction histories, and digital evidence. Furthermore, authorities are thoroughly investigating whether A's husband, a man in his 50s identified as B, was actively complicit in the criminal conspiracy. Given the severity of the financial damage and the risk of flight, the police are actively reviewing a request for an arrest warrant for A.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of retail investors to high-yield promises, commonly referred to in South Korea as "gold-tech" (gold investment) scams. Financial experts and regulatory bodies repeatedly emphasize that any investment scheme guaranteeing extraordinary short-term profits or above-market returns should be treated with extreme caution. Authorities urge citizens to verify the legal registration and regulatory compliance of investment-related businesses before committing personal capital to prevent falling victim to similar fraudulent operations.
