US Deploys Third Carrier and 10,000 Troops to Middle East Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

WASHINGTON — In a major military escalation, the United States has dispatched a third aircraft carrier strike group and roughly 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East, according to recent reports from the Wall Street Journal. The move comes amid heightened speculation regarding potential military action against Iran following the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt departed its home port in San Diego on September 27, heading toward the Middle East. It was followed closely the next day by the USS Makin Island amphibious ready group, carrying the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. This fresh deployment will introduce between 9,000 and 10,000 additional sailors and Marines to the region, with full deployment expected by late November.

Currently, the U.S. Central Command maintains a strong presence in the area, including the aircraft carriers USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, along with the USS Boxer amphibious ready group and roughly 50,000 stationed personnel. The arrival of the Roosevelt will mark the first time since April that three U.S. carriers have simultaneously operated in the Middle East.

This aggressive buildup aligns with mounting pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration regarding Iran. In a recent interview with Time magazine, President Trump signaled that if ongoing diplomatic efforts and potential agreements with Tehran fall through, a renewed military strike could be on the table immediately after the midterm elections.

Meanwhile, defense analysts are watching to see if the deployment of the Roosevelt will prompt the rotation of the USS George Washington back to its home port in Yokosuka, Japan. If the Washington returns to the Pacific, it could help alleviate growing concerns over potential naval carrier gaps in the Asia-Pacific region.

As the deployment unfolds, international observers remain on high alert as Washington weighs its next strategic moves in the Middle East.
