The Pyeongtaek International Exchange Foundation will host "Vietnam Culture Week" at Baedari Library from June 20th to 26th. This event is part of the "2025 Pyeongtaek World Culture Week," which introduces international cultures to citizens. This year, Vietnam has been selected as the guest country, showcasing its diverse culture and arts to the citizens of Pyeongtaek. The Pyeongtaek International Exchange Foundation hopes that this event will provide an opportunity for Pyeongtaek citizens to deeply understand Vietnamese culture and promote cultural exchange between the two countries.
Opening Ceremony: A Feast of Vietnamese Culture
The opening ceremony, kicking off Vietnam Culture Week, will be grandly held at 4 PM on June 20th at the Baedari Library lawn square. A special ceremony utilizing the lotus, Vietnam's national flower, will take place at the opening. The lotus symbolizes purity, beauty, and spiritual enlightenment in Vietnamese culture, and it is expected to convey the spirit of Vietnam to Pyeongtaek citizens at this opening ceremony.
Furthermore, a variety of Vietnamese traditional instrument and dance performances will offer an opportunity to fully enjoy the beauty of Vietnamese art. Notably, fusion gugak performances with a Korean flair will also be presented, creating a unique stage where the cultures of both countries harmonize.
One of the highlights of the opening ceremony is a talk concert with 'Cherry Hyeri,' a popular Korean YouTuber with 1 million subscribers in Vietnam. Ms. Cherry Hyeri will share her experiences living in Vietnam and cultural insights with citizens, providing a time to resolve curiosities about Vietnam and approach it more intimately. This is expected to be a great help in gaining practical information about Vietnam and understanding it from a local perspective.
Five-Sense Satisfying Vietnamese Culture Experience Booths
The culture experience booths, one of the core programs of Vietnam Culture Week, will operate on both June 20th and 21st. Various programs are prepared at these booths, allowing visitors to directly experience and feel Vietnamese traditions with all five senses.
Visitors can glimpse the delicacy and originality of Vietnamese art by participating in Vietnamese traditional mask making. Vietnamese masks are primarily made of paper or wood, depicting animals or mythological figures, and are used in festivals or rituals. Making a mask yourself will enhance your understanding of Vietnamese traditional art.
Additionally, visitors can directly experience "Nhảy sạp," a Vietnamese traditional game. Nhảy sạp is a folk dance using bamboo sticks, originating from the traditional games of the Tay ethnic minority in Vietnam. Participants can feel the lively festive atmosphere of Vietnam by leaping between bamboo sticks to the music. In addition, a corner will be set up where visitors can try on and take photos in "Áo dài," Vietnam's beautiful traditional costume. Áo dài is a garment symbolizing the elegance and beauty of Vietnamese women, with its colors and designs varying by region and status. Through Áo dài, you can directly experience Vietnam's aesthetic sense and traditions.
Befitting Vietnam, a country of gastronomy, a "Bánh Mì" sandwich tasting corner will also be operated. Bánh Mì is a representative street food combining French baguettes and Vietnamese ingredients, with an exquisite harmony of crispy bread and various fillings. You can experience the taste of Vietnam through fresh Bánh Mì, as if tasting it locally.
Vietnamese residents in Pyeongtaek and Vietnamese international students from local universities such as Pyeongtaek University will directly participate in these experience booths, introducing Vietnamese culture and creating a venue for communication with citizens. This will go beyond simple experiences, becoming a meaningful time to directly understand and empathize with the lives and culture of the Vietnamese people.
Cultural Exhibitions and Lectures with the Embassy of Vietnam in Korea
During Vietnam Culture Week, special cultural exhibitions and lecture programs will also be offered free of charge in cooperation with the Embassy of Vietnam in Korea and the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism in Korea.
The cultural exhibition will feature photographs and artifacts depicting Vietnam's history, geography, art, and daily life. It will visually showcase various facets of Vietnam, including beautiful landscapes of Vietnam's brilliant historical sites such as Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Hue, along with Vietnamese traditional handicrafts and folk paintings. Furthermore, a corner introducing the unique cultures and lifestyles of Vietnam's 54 ethnic minorities will be provided, which is expected to help understand Vietnam's multicultural characteristics.
Cultural lectures will consist of "Nón lá" (Vietnamese conical hat) making and Vietnamese cooking classes. Nón lá is a symbolic traditional Vietnamese hat, used not only for practical purposes like shading from the sun and rain but also as a fashion item expressing the elegance of Vietnamese women. Participants can experience Vietnamese traditional crafts by making their own Nón lá and deepen their understanding of Vietnamese culture.
In the Vietnamese cooking class, local chefs or Vietnamese instructors will directly demonstrate representative Vietnamese dishes, and participants will have time to cook together. Representative Vietnamese dishes include Phở (rice noodles), Gỏi cuốn (spring rolls), Bánh xèo (Vietnamese pancake), and various other local foods can be directly made and tasted, allowing for a deep experience of Vietnamese food culture. These lectures will provide in-depth knowledge of Vietnamese culture and help participants directly experience the Vietnamese way of life.
