Bucheon Municipal Simgok Library Renovated as a Citizen-Centric Space

 Family reading rooms, book cafes, youth spaces, and other customized facilities created for citizens.

Bucheon City announced that the remodeling work of the Municipal Simgok Library, a public pledge of Mayor Cho Yong-ik's 8th popular election, was completed on June 26th and is scheduled to reopen in September.

Bucheon Municipal Simgok Library, completed in 1985, is Bucheon's first municipal library and has been with citizens for over 40 years. This remodeling was promoted to resolve the inconvenience of citizens due to facility deterioration, and in particular, it was carried out respecting the design intention of Kwak Young-hoon, the library's original architect, which was "an open space where people and nature harmonize."

This project was promoted to create a space where citizens can relax while looking at the panoramic view of Bucheon City from the rooftop. To this end, an elevator was installed to improve vertical movement, and convenience was preemptively reviewed through public architectural deliberation.

In addition, the city proceeded with the detailed design by setting "Beginning and Birth in a Nest" as the design direction through a design competition to revive the historical meaning of Bucheon's first municipal library. Construction began in January of this year and was completed in June.

Through the remodeling, the 1st floor was 조성ed into a reading room for infants and children, and a nursing room for families to use together. The 2nd floor consists of a book cafe and office space, and the 3rd floor is composed of an open general reading room. The 4th floor was decorated as a youth space, the Sosa Youth Zone, creating a citizen-customized space that prioritizes user convenience.

The rooftop has been opened to the public, additional railings have been installed for safety, and new awnings have been provided to create a resting area. Inside the library, new design furniture was created to improve the reading environment, and old air conditioning facilities and power distribution boards were replaced so that local residents can use them comfortably.

Kim Ui-bin, head of Bucheon City's Facilities Construction Division, said, "We will ensure that all citizens, regardless of generation, can use the library more conveniently," and "We will continue to strive to improve public buildings that reflect the characteristics of users and the region."

Bucheon City has set "Bucheon Leaps Again, Together with Citizens" as its administrative slogan and plans to continuously create an inclusive administrative environment where all citizens can safely and conveniently use public services.
