Gangjin-gun announced on the 23rd that the '2025 Gangjin Fishing Masters Governor of Gangjin Cup Sensual Seabream Boat Fishing Tournament' was successfully held from the 19th to the 20th at the Maryang Port breakwater area.

Anglers from across the nation gathered in the pristine waters off the coast of Gangjin to engage in a passionate competition targeting blackhead seabream (sensual seabream), reaffirming Gangjin's potential as a marine tourism city.

Despite a slight delay in schedule due to dense fog in the early morning, the participants' concentration remained unwavering throughout the tournament.

The final results revealed Mr. Yoon Hyun-soo, a local resident of Gangjin, as the champion, having caught a 2.96kg blackhead seabream. He was awarded the grand prize of 10 million KRW. Mr. Kang Min-kyun from Gochang, Jeollabuk-do (2.53kg), and Mr. Lim Jong-yeol from Mokpo (2.43kg) followed in second and third places, respectively. Notably, the strong performance of local anglers was a highlight of the event.

Following the closing ceremony, a raffle draw was held, offering a variety of prizes sponsored by leading domestic fishing brands such as Aphis, Shimano, and NS, enhancing the satisfaction of the participants.

Significantly, this tournament made a substantial contribution to the revitalization of the local economy.

More than half of the participants utilized accommodation facilities within Gangjin, and visitors who accompanied their families actively engaged in local consumption. The county implemented its 'Anyone Half-Price Travel' policy, providing discounts on participation fees and inducing spending through the redemption of Gangjin Love Gift Certificates.

Promotional events for local specialties were also conducted in conjunction with the Maryang Saturday Seafood Market, including consumption promotion events, the distribution of Marine World-sponsored T-shirts, and the operation of direct sales booths for seafood products.

Notably, the total number of tourists visiting Maryang-myeon over the two days, Saturday and Sunday, reached 3,855, demonstrating the potential of combining fishing and tourism into a comprehensive tourism offering.

Gangjin Mayor Kang Jin-won stated, "The Sensual Seabream Boat Fishing Tournament has established itself as a Gangjin-style festival model that integrates fishing, marine leisure, the local economy, and tourism. We will continue to cultivate Gangjin as a leading marine leisure city on the southern coast."

Meanwhile, the '2025 Gangjin Fishing Masters' will continue with the 'Shimano Cup Red Seabream Boat Fishing Tournament' from May 9th to 10th. Registration for this event has been open on the official website since April 15th.

Blackhead Seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) Fishing:

Blackhead seabream, known as "gamseongdom" in Korean, is a highly prized game fish in South Korea due to its delicious taste and the challenge it presents to anglers. They are typically found in coastal waters and are known for their cautious behavior, requiring skillful techniques and specialized tackle to catch. Boat fishing is a popular method for targeting larger blackhead seabream in deeper waters. Tournaments focusing on this species are common along the southern coast of Korea, attracting both amateur and professional anglers.

Economic Impact of Fishing Tournaments:

Fishing tournaments can have a significant positive impact on local economies. Participants typically spend money on accommodation, food, transportation, fishing gear, and other related expenses. Tournaments also attract spectators and media attention, further boosting local businesses and tourism. The 'Anyone Half-Price Travel' policy implemented by Gangjin-gun is a strategic move to maximize the economic benefits by encouraging participants and their families to stay longer and spend more within the region. The provision of Gangjin Love Gift Certificates further incentivizes local spending, ensuring that the economic benefits are directly channeled back into the community.

Gangjin-gun's Marine Tourism Initiatives:

Gangjin-gun has been actively promoting its marine tourism sector, leveraging its pristine coastline and abundant seafood resources. The annual fishing tournaments are a key component of this strategy, attracting fishing enthusiasts and showcasing the region's natural beauty. The integration of the fishing tournament with the Maryang Saturday Seafood Market and the involvement of local businesses like Marine World demonstrate a holistic approach to tourism development. The Maryang Saturday Seafood Market is a popular attraction known for its fresh seafood and vibrant atmosphere, providing a complementary experience for tournament participants and other visitors. Marine World, likely a local marine-themed park or attraction, further enhances the tourism appeal of the region.

The Significance of the Tournament Location: Maryang Port:

Maryang Port is strategically located and known for its excellent fishing grounds for blackhead seabream. The breakwater area provides accessible fishing spots and can accommodate numerous boats, making it an ideal venue for a large-scale fishing tournament. The port itself is likely a hub for local fishing activities and seafood trade, further contributing to the region's maritime identity.

Future Prospects for Gangjin's Marine Tourism:

Gangjin-gun's commitment to developing its marine leisure sector through events like the Fishing Masters tournament and supportive policies like the 'Anyone Half-Price Travel' initiative indicates a promising future for its tourism industry. By successfully combining fishing, local commerce, and regional attractions, Gangjin is establishing a sustainable model for marine tourism that benefits both visitors and the local community. The upcoming 'Shimano Cup Red Seabream Boat Fishing Tournament' further demonstrates the county's ongoing efforts to diversify its offerings and attract a wider range of anglers and tourists. The focus on high-value species like blackhead seabream and red seabream also aligns with attracting serious anglers who are more likely to spend on quality gear and local services.

In conclusion, the '2025 Gangjin Fishing Masters Sensual Seabream Boat Fishing Tournament' was not just a successful sporting event but also a significant driver for local economic activity and a showcase of Gangjin's potential as a thriving marine tourism destination. The strategic integration of tourism policies, local businesses, and natural resources positions Gangjin as a rising star in South Korea's marine leisure landscape.
