Nestled in Obong-ri, Jukwang-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon Province, where the azure East Sea meets the majestic Seoraksan Mountains, lies Wanggok Village. This picturesque folk village seems to transport visitors back in time, preserving over 50 traditional Northern Korean-style houses dating back to the 19th century in their original form. The winding narrow alleys and quaint mud walls that embrace the serene tile-roofed houses create a scene reminiscent of a tranquil landscape painting, exuding warmth and familiarity. Recognizing its profound historical and academic significance, Wanggok Village was designated as National Folk Cultural Heritage No. 235 in 2000, reaffirming its importance as a cultural treasure.

The most distinctive characteristic of Wanggok Village is its concentration of Northern-style houses, reflecting the architectural traditions of the Hamgyeong Province region. Adapted to the colder climate, these homes are typically arranged in 'ㄱ' or 'ㄷ' shapes to shield against the wind and maximize sunlight exposure. Notably, the double-layered construction, advantageous for winter insulation, and the prevalence of heated floors (ondol) instead of wooden verandas (maru) clearly distinguish them from the houses found in the southern regions of Korea. These unique architectural features offer invaluable insights into the lifestyle of the inhabitants of this area during that era.

Wandering through the village, one's gaze is inevitably drawn to the timeworn mud walls. Gently curving and low-lying, these earthen barriers softly connect the houses, imbuing the entire village with a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The glimpses of earthenware jars (jangdokdae) and modest vegetable gardens peeking over the walls evoke a sense of nostalgia, as if visiting a long-cherished hometown.

However, Wanggok Village is not merely a static preservation of the past. It remains a vibrant community where residents continue to live and actively strive to uphold their traditions. Notably, eight vacant houses acquired by the government have been transformed into accommodation for visitors, offering a unique experiential opportunity. Spending a night in a traditional Hanok, stoking the underfloor heating system (agungi), and warming oneself in the cozy ondol room provides a memorable escape for modern individuals weary of urban life. Furthermore, small restaurants and hands-on programs operated by the villagers allow visitors to immerse themselves even more deeply in the authentic charm of Wanggok Village.

The surroundings of Wanggok Village boast stunning natural landscapes and popular tourist attractions, making it an ideal base for exploration. The azure expanse of Songjiho Beach, the refreshing sea breeze of Daejin Port perfect for a stroll, and the tranquil pine forest paths of Hwajinpo Beach offer diverse delights for visitors. Additionally, a variety of restaurants and cafes serving fresh seafood are located nearby, catering to those seeking a culinary journey.
