Incheon Invests $53 Million in Second Subsea Pipeline to Bolster Water Supply to Yeongjong Island

INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA – In a significant move to secure a reliable water supply for the burgeoning Yeongjong Island, the Incheon Metropolitan City Government has announced a substantial investment of 71.3 billion Korean won (approximately $53 million USD) in the construction of a new 2.5-kilometer subsea pipeline connecting the island to the mainland. The project aims to create a dual water supply system, mitigating risks associated with the existing single pipeline and catering to the increasing water demands of the region.

The existing 1350mm diameter pipeline, which currently serves Yeongjong Island via a subsea route from the Gongchon Water Purification Plant, has raised concerns regarding potential disruptions due to leaks or other unforeseen incidents. Such disruptions could severely impact the operations of the crucial Incheon International Airport and the daily lives of the island's residents.

To address these vulnerabilities and anticipate future needs, the city will lay a new 1200mm diameter pipeline running parallel to the existing one. This second subsea conduit will stretch 2.5 kilometers from Yeongjong Island to the North Port Port Support Complex. The project is a proactive measure to accommodate the rapid development of areas like Yeongjong Sky City and Midan City, which are experiencing significant population growth and consequently, increased water consumption. Furthermore, the ongoing development of the Incheon International Airport, the Airport New City, and the planned Yongyu-Muui tourism complex are also expected to drive up water demand in the years to come.

Unlike the existing pipeline, which was buried using the pre-excavation method, the new pipeline will be constructed using the more robust Shield Tunneling Method (TBM). This advanced technique will involve creating a subsea tunnel with a depth of 60 meters and a diameter of 3 meters, ensuring greater protection against seawater exposure and potential damage. The total cost of this ambitious undertaking is estimated at 71.302 billion Korean won.

Upon its anticipated completion in October 2024, the dual pipeline system will guarantee a more stable and consistent water supply to Yeongjong Island. Additionally, the project includes the implementation of real-time water quality monitoring systems along the subsea pipelines. This will enable prompt detection and immediate response to any water quality issues, as well as facilitate more efficient maintenance procedures such as pipe cleaning.

Cho In-kwon, Head of the Incheon Metropolitan City Waterworks Authority, expressed his commitment to the timely completion of the project, stating, "We are fully dedicated to ensuring that the Yeongjong Island subsea transmission pipeline construction project proceeds according to schedule and is completed by October 2024 without any setbacks. This investment underscores our commitment to providing a reliable and high-quality water supply to the residents and businesses of Yeongjong Island."

This strategic infrastructure investment by Incheon City demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to ensuring the sustainable development and well-being of Yeongjong Island, a vital economic and residential hub in the region. The enhanced water supply system will not only provide greater security but also support the continued growth and prosperity of the island.
