Copenhagen, Denmark – Vietnam Airlines, the flag carrier of Vietnam, is set to significantly enhance its European footprint with the launch of a new direct service connecting Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to Copenhagen, Denmark. Copenhagen Airport officially confirmed the new route, marking a pivotal moment in fostering direct air connectivity, trade, and tourism between Denmark and Vietnam. The inaugural flight is scheduled for December of this year.
This new service will be Denmark's first-ever direct air link to Vietnam, a rapidly growing Southeast Asian economy and a popular tourist destination. The move underscores Vietnam Airlines' ambitious strategy to expand its international network, particularly within Europe, a key market for both leisure and business travelers.
The new route will operate three times a week, utilizing Vietnam Airlines' state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. These modern wide-body jets are configured with a three-class cabin layout, offering passengers a comfortable and versatile travel experience. The configuration includes 28 luxurious lie-flat business class seats in a 1-2-1 arrangement, 35 premium economy seats in a 2-3-2 configuration, and 211 standard economy class seats arranged 3-3-3. This varied seating ensures options for diverse passenger needs, from business travelers seeking productivity and rest to tourists looking for an enhanced travel experience.
Copenhagen Airport expressed immense satisfaction with the new partnership. "We sincerely thank Vietnam Airlines for their trust and collaboration in bringing this important new service to life, and we look forward to a strong and lasting partnership," stated a representative from Copenhagen Airport. This collaboration is expected to significantly boost passenger traffic at Copenhagen, further cementing its status as a major European hub for long-haul flights.
Strategic Expansion Across Europe
The Copenhagen route is the latest in a series of strategic expansions by Vietnam Airlines in Europe. This summer, the airline is already increasing its services from Munich, Germany, to meet robust demand between the two countries. Effective July, flights between Munich and Hanoi will increase from two to three times weekly, while the existing two weekly flights to HCMC will continue on new, optimized days.
Munich was a significant addition when launched last year, becoming Vietnam Airlines' fourth European destination. It complemented the airline's established services to major European gateways: Frankfurt, Germany; London Heathrow, UK; and Paris Charles de Gaulle, France. These routes have been instrumental in connecting Vietnam with key economic and cultural centers in Western Europe.
Looking ahead, Vietnam Airlines is also set to launch flights between Vietnam and Milan, Italy, on July 1st. This move into the Italian market further diversifies its European portfolio. With the addition of Copenhagen in December, the Danish capital will become Vietnam Airlines' sixth direct destination in Europe, highlighting the airline's commitment to strengthening its presence on the continent.
Economic and Tourism Impact
The establishment of a direct air link between Copenhagen and Ho Chi Minh City is expected to yield substantial economic and tourism benefits for both Denmark and Vietnam. For Denmark, it opens up direct access to a dynamic Southeast Asian market with a rapidly growing middle class and increasing outbound tourism. Danish businesses will also benefit from a direct connection to Vietnam's largest city and economic powerhouse, facilitating trade, investment, and cultural exchanges. Key Danish industries, such as renewable energy, maritime, and food and agriculture, could see enhanced opportunities for collaboration with Vietnam.
For Vietnam, the new route strengthens its position as an attractive destination for European tourists and investors. Denmark, known for its high disposable income and strong interest in sustainable tourism, represents a valuable new source market. The direct connection will make Vietnam more accessible for Danish travelers, who previously faced multi-stop journeys. Furthermore, it will facilitate Vietnamese exports to the Nordic region and potentially attract more Danish direct foreign investment into Vietnam's burgeoning economy.
This route also aligns with Vietnam's broader tourism recovery strategy post-pandemic, which focuses on attracting high-spending international visitors and diversifying source markets beyond traditional Asian destinations. With its rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and vibrant urban centers, Vietnam is well-positioned to capitalize on this increased accessibility from Northern Europe.
Future Prospects and Market Dynamics
The choice of Copenhagen as the latest European gateway reflects Vietnam Airlines' data-driven approach to network expansion, identifying underserved routes with high growth potential. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner's efficiency and passenger comfort are well-suited for long-haul routes like Copenhagen-HCMC, making the service economically viable and appealing to travelers.
Industry analysts suggest that this expansion is part of a larger trend among Asian carriers to build stronger direct connections with secondary European hubs, rather than solely relying on the traditional mega-hubs. This strategy helps airlines capture niche markets, reduce reliance on connecting flights through other carriers, and offer more convenient travel options to passengers.
As Vietnam's economy continues its robust growth trajectory and its tourism sector regains its pre-pandemic momentum, direct air links like the Copenhagen service will be crucial in supporting these developments. The new route is expected to not only facilitate travel but also deepen diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between Denmark and Vietnam, contributing to a more interconnected global economy.
