BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – Acclaimed South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo's newest film, 〈그 자연이 네게 뭐라고 하니/Did the Grass Say Anything?), was screened to a full house at the Cine Teatro Alvear in Buenos Aires on Friday, April 4th. The premiere was a highlight of the 26th Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI), a prominent cinematic event in Latin America showcasing noteworthy films from around the globe.

Kim Misuk, Director of the Korean Cultural Center in Argentina, attended the screening, sharing the experience with local film enthusiasts. Her presence underscored the cultural significance of the event and the growing appreciation for Korean cinema in Argentina.

Hong Sang-soo holds the distinction of being the most frequently invited director to BAFICI, a testament to his unique cinematic voice and international recognition within the independent film community. 〈그 자연이 네게 뭐라고 하니/Did the Grass Say Anything?〉 made its world premiere earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, garnering attention for its signature blend of minimalist storytelling, naturalistic performances, and introspective themes often exploring relationships and the human condition. This screening at BAFICI marked the film's first unveiling to Argentinian audiences.

The Korean Cultural Center played an active role in the film's local premiere by attending the first of three scheduled screenings. This engagement provided an opportunity for direct interaction with Argentinian viewers who had eagerly anticipated the film's arrival. The enthusiastic response was evident in the sold-out theater, indicating a strong interest in Hong Sang-soo's work and contemporary Korean cinema.

Adding a touch of Korean hospitality, attendees were treated to traditional Korean snacks, enhancing their overall cultural experience beyond the film itself. This thoughtful gesture further fostered cultural exchange and provided a taste of Korea to the Argentinian audience.

BAFICI, renowned for its diverse selection of independent films and its role in discovering new cinematic talents, continues to be a vital platform for international filmmakers like Hong Sang-soo to connect with audiences in Latin America. The festival's commitment to showcasing innovative and thought-provoking cinema aligns perfectly with Hong's distinctive style, characterized by its improvisational nature, subtle humor, and profound observations on everyday life.

〈그 자연이 네게 뭐라고 하니/Did the Grass Say Anything?〉 is expected to resonate with BAFICI's discerning audience, who appreciate films that challenge conventional narratives and offer unique perspectives on human relationships and existential questions. The film's premiere adds another significant chapter to Hong Sang-soo's long-standing relationship with the festival and further strengthens the cultural ties between South Korea and Argentina through the medium of cinema. The remaining screenings are also highly anticipated, promising to introduce more Argentinians to the captivating world of Hong Sang-soo's filmmaking.

This successful premiere highlights the increasing global reach and impact of South Korean cinema, with directors like Hong Sang-soo captivating audiences worldwide with their distinct artistic visions. The collaboration between the Korean Cultural Center and BAFICI underscores the importance of cultural exchange in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation between nations.
