David Cha, Chairman of the non-profit organization Ethiopia Bet, defined the organization’s identity with these words. Inheriting the spirit of grassroots diplomacy that has quietly continued since 1968, Ethiopia Bet—now officially incorporated—aims for "sustainable self-reliance" by changing systems rather than merely delivering goods.

■ Repaying the Sacrifice of the Kagnew Battalion through ‘Partnership’
The foundation of Ethiopia Bet is rooted in a deep sense of gratitude toward Korean history. It is a commitment to remember the dedication of the "Kagnew Battalion," the Ethiopian imperial guards who fought as part of the UN forces during the Korean War. "It is now our turn to support their descendants and the Ethiopian people with sustainable housing and infrastructure," Chairman Cha explained, describing it as a "partnership of gratitude and mutual prosperity."

Chairman Cha chose the path of establishing a non-profit corporation to ensure accountability and field-driven sincerity. "Through my long experience in international business, I realized that true help comes from systemic change, not temporary material aid," he stated. "I believe my calling is to serve as a bridge to awaken the infinite potential of Ethiopia."

■ ‘Localization’ and ‘Self-esteem’: Shifting the Paradigm of Aid
The reality in the field was harsh. Substantial wealth gaps and a lack of infrastructure threatened basic survival. However, the greater challenge was the structural limitation where communities would revert to their original state once external support ceased.

To address this, Ethiopia Bet adheres to two core principles. The first is Localization. Rather than unilaterally imposing advanced Korean technology, the organization ensures that over 80% of its focus is on communication with local experts and residents to build models optimized for the local climate and customs.

The second is the Protection of Self-esteem. The organization avoids vertical relationships between 'givers' and 'receivers.' "We ensure that those receiving support do not lose their dignity and instead participate as the primary stakeholders of the projects," Cha emphasized.

■ The Ultimate Goal: ‘Goodbye Ethiopia Bet’
The long-term roadmap for Ethiopia Bet is both specific and ambitious. The organization is currently pushing forward with medical infrastructure projects, such as establishing cancer and cardiovascular centers, distributing cervical cancer diagnostic tools, and training cytopathologists. Furthermore, it is transferring modern technology to the coffee industry to bolster economic independence.

Paradoxically, the ultimate goal of the organization is "Goodbye Ethiopia Bet." It envisions a day when their support is no longer necessary because Ethiopia has achieved complete economic and cultural self-reliance as a hub of Africa.

Chairman Cha concluded with a plea for public interest. "Your attention becomes someone’s 'reason to live,'" he said. "Beyond simple donation, I invite you to join us in this great journey of building a 'Home of Hope' on the other side of the world."
