SON HEUNG-MIN JOINS LAFC, REVEALS IT WASN'T HIS FIRST CHOICE

LOS ANGELES — In a major move shaking up the football world, South Korean superstar Son Heung-min has officially joined Major League Soccer (MLS) club LAFC. The former Tottenham captain, who announced his departure from the English club just five days ago, was introduced to the press and fans at a lively press conference held at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on August 7. The event, which drew significant attention from local dignitaries including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Consul General Kim Young-wan, highlighted the immense excitement surrounding his arrival.

Son, who recently played his farewell match for Tottenham in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul, made his way to Los Angeles on August 5. His introduction to LAFC was swift; he was already featured on the stadium's jumbotron as an "LAFC striker" during a match the previous day, a taste of the fanfare to come. He was presented with the number 7 jersey, a number he has worn for most of his career, symbolizing his role as a key player.

Speaking to reporters and fans in a press conference broadcast live on the club's official YouTube channel, Son shared his excitement, stating that coming to Los Angeles was a "dream come true." He offered a candid look into his decision-making process, admitting that LAFC wasn't his initial top choice.

"Honestly, this wasn't my first choice," Son confessed, "but after the season ended, I had a call with John Thorrington (the club's President and General Manager), and that conversation changed my mind. I'm here to win. I want to play entertaining football and be successful."

Son credited Thorrington and Bennett Rosenthal, the lead owner, for their persistent efforts in his recruitment. He also spoke about his motivation for the move, explaining, "I gave everything I had at Tottenham, and I felt I needed a new chapter, a new challenge."

A key factor in his decision was the advice of former Tottenham teammate and good friend, Hugo Lloris. Lloris, who himself made the move to LAFC in the winter transfer window of the 2023-2024 season, had nothing but praise for Los Angeles. "Hugo only had good things to say about Los Angeles," Son said with a laugh. "He's an amazing player and person. I'm excited to see him and play with him again. Now that he's my captain again, I have to say only good things about him!"

The dynamic between Son and Lloris is a unique twist of fate. Lloris had passed on the captain's armband to Son at Tottenham, and now the roles are reversed at LAFC, with Lloris serving as captain. This reunion promises to bring a familiar camaraderie and leadership to the team.

Son also displayed his characteristic wit during the press conference, jokingly asking reporters whether he should refer to the sport as "football" or "soccer" in the United States. Beyond his personal goals, Son expressed a desire to be a mentor, stating, "I'm here to achieve great results, but I also want to advise the young players and help them develop. I'm looking forward to meeting my teammates and lifting a trophy together."

Son's arrival marks a significant moment for both LAFC and MLS. His global popularity and on-field talent are expected to not only elevate the club's profile but also further boost the league's growing reputation on the international stage. His winning mentality, combined with his leadership and mentorship qualities, makes him a formidable addition to the team as they aim for continued success.
