A stunning discovery in the rugged terrain of Jirisan National Park has captivated the attention of herbal medicine enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Veteran wild ginseng hunter Mr. Hwang (60s), hailing from Hamyang, South Gyeongsang Province, unearthed a cluster of 30 exceptionally old wild ginseng roots, estimated to be over 70 years in age. The Korea Traditional Wild Ginseng Association officially announced the extraordinary find on May 8th, stating that Mr. Hwang made the discovery around 7:20 AM on May 6th in the Jirisan area.

Wild ginseng, known in Korean as "Cheonjong Sansam," is highly prized as it grows naturally in the deep mountains without any human cultivation. Ginseng roots that have survived and thrived in the wild for over 50 years across multiple generations are particularly valued for their potent medicinal properties. What makes this discovery even more remarkable is that the 30 roots were found within a 5-meter radius, indicating a rare family group that has persisted for at least four generations. This exceptional occurrence underscores the pristine natural environment and vitality of Jirisan.

A representative from the Korea Traditional Wild Ginseng Association lauded the find, stating, "The color, shape, aroma, and taste are all of exceptional quality." They further emphasized the significance of the quantity, noting that "it is a substantial amount that could sufficiently serve three adults." Following appraisal, the association estimated the value of the discovered wild ginseng at a staggering 170 million Korean Won (approximately $130,000 USD), cautiously suggesting that the roots, bearing the marks of decades of natural growth, are likely to possess outstanding medicinal efficacy.

Jirisan Mountain has long been revered as a mystical area abundant in precious medicinal herbs and wild ginseng. However, the simultaneous discovery of 30 Cheonjong Sansam roots is an extremely unusual event. Adding to its significance, this is the first reported finding of wild ginseng in the Jirisan area this year, suggesting the continued health of the mountain's ecosystem and its capacity to nurture rare medicinal plants.

The Value and Efficacy of Wild Ginseng

Wild ginseng stands apart from its cultivated counterparts due to its rarity and potent medicinal effects. Having endured harsh natural conditions for decades, even centuries, it is believed to have accumulated a concentrated natural energy that offers various health benefits, including boosting the immune system, alleviating fatigue, exhibiting anti-cancer properties, and improving blood circulation. Wild ginseng that has naturally propagated over several generations is particularly believed to possess enhanced medicinal power.

Traditional Korean medicine texts, such as the Dongui Bogam (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine), document ginseng's ability to fortify the internal organs, calm the mind, improve vision, and promote blood circulation. Modern scientific research has also identified various bioactive compounds in ginseng, such as saponins, polyphenols, and polysaccharides, which support its traditional uses by demonstrating immune-boosting, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Ecological Significance of Jirisan and Conservation Efforts

This significant discovery of wild ginseng underscores the exceptional ecological value of Jirisan National Park. Designated as Korea's first national park in 1967, Jirisan has been a vital repository of biodiversity, home to numerous plant and animal species, including endangered ones. Its deep valleys and dense forests provide an optimal environment for a variety of medicinal plants to flourish.

However, concerns regarding the preservation of Jirisan's ecosystem have been growing due to recent climate change and human interference. Indiscriminate harvesting and environmental degradation can threaten the habitats and survival of rare medicinal plants like Cheonjong Sansam. Therefore, sustained attention and efforts are crucial to preserve the ecological value of Jirisan and pass it on intact to future generations. Collaboration between national park authorities and local communities is essential to establish systematic protection and management systems and to explore sustainable approaches where nature and humans can coexist.

The Importance and Protection of Shimmani Culture

The discovery has also brought renewed attention to the traditional Shimmani culture. Shimmani are experienced individuals who venture deep into the mountains to find and harvest wild ginseng, relying on their extensive knowledge and honed skills. Rooted in a deep understanding and respect for nature, they traditionally ascend the mountains and harvest ginseng with gratitude when found.

However, the number of traditional Shimmani has been declining in modern society, risking the loss of their valuable knowledge and experience. There is a growing recognition of the need to re-evaluate the value of traditional Shimmani culture and to preserve and transmit their wisdom for the sustainable utilization and conservation of precious medicinal resources like wild ginseng.

This remarkable find in Jirisan transcends the mere discovery of a rare medicinal herb. It delivers a profound message about the ecological significance of Jirisan, the importance of traditional Shimmani culture, and the harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity. Continued interest and dedication to nurturing Jirisan's natural environment and perpetuating Korea's unique traditions will be essential in the years to come.
