HADONG, South Korea - The vibrant red hues of azaleas provided a stunning backdrop for the 33rd annual Hyeongjebong Azalea Ceremony, held on Saturday morning at the 1,115-meter-high Hyeongjebong Peak in Akyang-myeon, Hadong County, Gyeongsangnam-do. Approximately 200 local residents and hiking enthusiasts from across the nation gathered to celebrate the breathtaking beauty of the blooming flowers and offer prayers for the peace and unity of the community.

Organized by the Hadong Akyang Mountaineering Association, the event saw participants travel conveniently via shuttle buses from Chwigallim in Akyang-myeon to the paragliding site near Hyeongjebong's summit. From there, they made their way to the specially prepared altar.

Hyeongjebong, or "Brothers Peak," is a prominent feature of the Jirisan mountain range's southern ridge, a dramatic 30-kilometer stretch leading from Samsinbong Peak to Gososanseong Fortress. The peak is renowned for its spectacular azalea colonies that bloom in harmony with its unique rock formations, earning it a place among Hadong's eight scenic wonders. The name "Brothers Peak" reflects the perceived deep connection between this peak and the neighboring Chilseongbong and Gujaebong, which together embrace the Akyang-myeon area, holding significant cultural and spiritual importance for local inhabitants.

The summit of Hyeongjebong offers panoramic vistas of Jirisan's most majestic peaks, including Cheonwangbong, Banyabong, Nogodan, and Jeseokbong. The area surrounding the peak is also rich in cultural and natural attractions, such as the Choi Champan댁, the historic residence featured in Park Kyung-ri's epic novel "The Land," the bustling Hwagae Market, the serene Ssanggyesa Temple, and picturesque wild tea plantations. Hadong is particularly famous as the origin of high-quality green tea, cultivated in the pristine environment of Jirisan, and the tea fields near Hyeongjebong contribute significantly to the region's landscape and economy.

This year's ceremony, however, took place under special circumstances. Due to the unfortunate wildfire that affected the Hadong area in March, entry to the southern part of Jirisan National Park is currently restricted until May 15th. As a result, only individuals who had obtained special permission from the Hadong County Forestry Department were allowed to participate in the event. This measure was implemented to ensure the safety of the fire-affected areas and prevent further ecological damage.

Attendees were treated to the stunning spectacle of the fully bloomed azalea fields and experienced the thrill of crossing the Sinseondae Cloud Bridge, which offers breathtaking views. The main prayer ceremony commenced at 11:00 AM at the Hyeongjebong Azalea Altar (helipad). Traditional rituals were conducted with the offering of fresh fruits and meticulously prepared rice cakes, as participants prayed for the well-being and prosperity of their community. The traditional proceedings fostered a sense of unity and shared hope among those present.

The Hyeongjebong Azalea Festival, which began in 1993, has become a cherished annual tradition for Hadong County. Local authorities emphasize the event's importance in protecting the region's valuable natural heritage and showcasing the beauty of the azaleas. Beyond being a local festival, it serves as a vital occasion for promoting the harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity and strengthening the bonds among local residents.

An official from the Akyang Mountaineering Association highlighted the significance of the event, stating, "The Hyeongjebong Azalea Festival embodies the warm spirit of local residents who deeply appreciate the beauty of nature and cherish their community. We are committed to continuing our efforts to promote and preserve the magnificent azaleas of Hyeongjebong and the rich forest resources of Hadong County." The association plays a key role in serving the local community and providing memorable experiences for visitors through the annual ceremony.

Thanks to the diligent safety measures implemented by Hadong County and the dedicated efforts of the Akyang Mountaineering Association, this year's Hyeongjebong Azalea Ceremony was a resounding success, leaving participants with unforgettable memories amidst the vibrant red landscape. There is a strong hope that this cherished cultural event will continue to thrive as a significant part of Hadong County's heritage for many years to come.
