40-Year-Old Ronaldo, Still the 'De Facto Power' of the National Team? The Football Emperor at a Crossroads

Lisbon, Portugal -  The debate surrounding 'Football Emperor' Cristiano Ronaldo (40, Al Nassr) is heating up. At 40 years old, his continued presence as a key player for the Portuguese national team is drawing both praise and concern. With Portugal set to face strong contenders Germany in the UEFA Nations League semifinals on June 5, interest in Ronaldo's status and future is intensifying.

'Icon' or 'Reality': Divided Perspectives

Views on Ronaldo are largely split into two camps. While some hail him as the enduring symbol of the Portuguese national team and one of the greatest players in football history, others offer a more pragmatic assessment, emphasizing the need to face reality and prepare for a generational shift.

"Goal.com" and "Sportskeeda" recently highlighted this debate by focusing on Ronaldo's recent trajectory and future. Portuguese national team legend Deco vociferously argued that questioning Ronaldo's place in the national team is "disrespectful." He asserted that "Ronaldo is the greatest player in the history of Portuguese and world football," emphasizing that despite the growth of younger players, Ronaldo remains the team's "iconic presence." Indeed, Portugal enjoyed a golden era centered around Ronaldo, winning the UEFA Euro in 2016 and becoming the inaugural Nations League champions in 2019.

However, legendary English striker Alan Shearer offered a more realistic assessment. He unequivocally stated, "It's clear Ronaldo is not what he once was. It's impossible to maintain that level at his age." While Ronaldo continues to score goals, analysis suggests he can no longer fully sustain his peak performance. Shearer stressed that the timing of Ronaldo's retirement is "a matter for him to decide, not the national team or the club," and specifically advised that "Ronaldo must step aside himself." He believes that for generational change, the player himself needs to make a 'great exit.'

Remaining at Al Nassr and Maintaining Key National Team Status: Ronaldo's Present

Currently, Ronaldo continues to showcase his undiminished scoring ability for his club, Al Nassr. He recorded 25 goals in 30 matches in the 2024-2025 Saudi League, making him the league's top scorer. However, Al Nassr's recent failure to qualify for the AFC Champions League has led to speculation about Ronaldo's potential transfer. In particular, rumors of a move to other Saudi clubs like Al Hilal ahead of the Club World Cup have fueled interest in his future.

Nevertheless, he has consistently featured for the Portuguese national team, solidifying his position as a key player under manager Roberto Martínez. Martínez has consistently selected Ronaldo since his appointment, valuing his experience and leadership. He demonstrated his continued prowess by starting in the friendly match against Slovenia in March 2024.

Upcoming Euro 2024, and the Future

This summer, Europe's biggest football event, UEFA Euro 2024, will take place in Germany. Ronaldo is expected to make his sixth appearance in the Euro finals at this tournament. If he plays in Euro 2024, he will be recorded as the player with the most appearances in the Euro finals in history.

Given his age, it's possible that Euro 2024 could be Ronaldo's last major international tournament. At the same time, the timing of his retirement remains uncertain. His overflowing competitive spirit and self-management abilities are well-known, and some predict that as long as he doesn't step down himself, we will continue to see him on the field.

Ronaldo's presence clearly impacts Portuguese football. His name and symbolic status still provide significant strength to the team, but there's also the challenge of providing sufficient opportunities for younger players and preparing for the future. When and how will Cristiano Ronaldo choose to make his 'great exit'? The eyes of football fans remain fixed on him.
