HD Hyundai Strengthens Submarine Development and MRO Cooperation with Portuguese Navy, Accelerating Global Defense Market Expansion

HD Hyundai is establishing a multifaceted cooperative relationship with the Portuguese Navy through a strategic partnership that extends beyond just warship construction to include maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. This collaboration is particularly anticipated to bolster HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' position in the global submarine market, as it will involve the joint development of small submarine models currently under development by the company.

 
A New Chapter of Cooperation Initiated at MADEX 2024

On May 30, at MADEX 2024, South Korea's largest defense exhibition held at BEXCO in Busan, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a "Strategic Partnership" Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Portuguese Navy. This MOU signifies the beginning of a comprehensive cooperative relationship that goes beyond simple vessel construction. Both parties will jointly endeavor to advance future naval technology and enhance competitiveness in the defense market.

An HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official stated, "MADEX is a gathering of leading defense companies, and we strategically approached it to leverage it as an opportunity to strengthen our competitiveness," emphasizing that this agreement will contribute to synergy creation through mutual complementarity in the global defense market.

 
Joint Development of Small Submarines to Secure New Growth Engines

A key aspect of this cooperation is the joint development in the small submarine sector. Currently, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is accelerating its push into the global submarine market by developing three types of export-oriented submarine models: 2,300-ton, 1,500-ton, and 800-ton classes. Having garnered attention from various countries by showcasing these models at MADEX 2024, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is expected to further enhance its small submarine technology and pave the way for new market penetration through joint development with the Portuguese Navy.

The small submarine market is experiencing global growth, particularly with increasing demand for coastal defense and special operations. Portugal, as a maritime nation bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, places great importance on maritime security, and small submarines are considered optimal strategic assets for this environment. The combination of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' proven submarine construction technology and the Portuguese Navy's operational experience has a strong potential to create innovative and competitive small submarine models for the international market.

 
Expanding MRO Business, Presenting a Sustainable Cooperation Model

Cooperation in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) business, in addition to warship construction, forms another crucial pillar of this partnership. MRO is a field that demands significant cost and technical expertise throughout a vessel's lifecycle, and an efficient MRO system greatly influences the operational efficiency and lifespan of a warship. The technology and expertise accumulated through building key vessels for the Republic of Korea Navy are already highly regarded in the international market. An HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official stated, "Based on HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' excellent shipbuilding technology, we plan to lead the global warship market through mutual complementarity with global defense companies."

This vision goes beyond simply exporting vessels; it aims for a win-win model that genuinely contributes to strengthening the naval capabilities of partner nations through technological cooperation, joint development, and MRO business expansion. This partnership with Portugal marks a significant step towards realizing HD Hyundai's vision, and it is expected to further expand its influence in the global defense market through future collaborations with more countries.
