Guri, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea – The 22nd annual Guri Rape Flower Festival concluded with great success after a three-day run from May 9th to 11th at Hangang Park in Topyeong-dong, Guri City. The festival, themed "Guri's Spring Blooming with Rape Flowers," captivated not only Guri citizens but also residents from neighboring areas, offering a special time to fully enjoy the late spring atmosphere amidst a sea of vibrant yellow blooms, diverse performances, hands-on activities, and delicious food.
Guri City annually cultivates seasonal flowers across approximately 67,000 square meters of flower gardens in Hangang Park, providing beautiful scenery for its citizens. The park has established itself as a regional attraction, hosting the yellow rape flower festival in spring and a red cosmos festival in autumn. This year's rape flower festival, marking its 22nd iteration, built upon years of experience to offer an even richer and more varied program, significantly enhancing visitor satisfaction.
Throughout the festival period, the special stage on the Hangang Park lawn buzzed with a continuous array of performances across various genres, amplifying the festive spirit. The pre-festival event on May 9th featured captivating performances by soulful vocalist Ali and powerful singer Jeong Dong-ha. A spectacular drone show illuminated the night sky, creating an unforgettable scene. The opening ceremony on May 10th saw the appearance of trot queen My Jin, "Mr. Trot 2" winner Ahn Seong-hoon, and the melodious ballad group December, further elevating the festival's atmosphere. On the final day, May 11th, popular "Mr. Trot" alumni Lee Chan-won, powerful vocalist Park Hye-shin, and energetic performer Park Goon delivered exciting performances. A dazzling fireworks display then brought the festival to a grand close, leaving a lasting impression.
Numerous photo zones, set against the backdrop of the stunning rape flower fields, were set up throughout the festival grounds, encouraging visitors to capture lasting memories. Additionally, a variety of hands-on experience booths, including traditional craft activities and flower-themed creation workshops, provided engaging programs for visitors of all ages. Notably, booths selling local agricultural specialties and diverse food trucks offered a rich culinary experience, adding to the festival's enjoyment.
A new addition to this year's Guri Rape Flower Festival, the "3-Day Market Stamp Tour," garnered significant positive feedback from visitors. This program aimed to naturally encourage festival attendees to patronize the downtown commercial areas surrounding the festival, thereby contributing to the local economy. Visitors who collected stamps by visiting the festival grounds and nearby shops during the event received small souvenirs, incentivizing participation. This initiative is being recognized as a novel approach that goes beyond simple festival enjoyment to promote synergy with local businesses.
Guri City actively supported public transportation use for visitors' convenience during the festival. Specifically, from May 9th to 11th, eight town bus routes extended their operations to Hangang Park from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, ensuring easy access to the festival grounds for attendees. These efforts minimized traffic congestion during the festival period and allowed more citizens and visitors to comfortably enjoy the festivities.
This year's Guri Rape Flower Festival is being hailed as a successful event that transcended a simple flower festival by combining beautiful natural scenery, rich cultural performances, diverse activities, and a connection with the local commercial district, fostering enjoyment for the entire local community. The vibrant display of blooming rape flowers and the varied programs provided citizens with lively spring memories and are evaluated to have positively impacted the local economy. Guri City plans to continue leveraging the beautiful natural environment of Hangang Park to host diverse cultural festivals and expand opportunities for citizens to enjoy culture. Anticipation is already building for what new sights and delights next year's rape flower festival will offer.
