ANYANG, SOUTH KOREA – In a proactive move to enhance public safety, the Anyang Fire Station has initiated a comprehensive campaign to educate residents on the correct and safe operation of evacuation slides (known as wangganggi in Korean). These crucial life-saving devices are designed as an alternative escape route from multi-story buildings when stairwells are compromised or inaccessible due to fire or other emergencies.
Evacuation slides are engineered to facilitate a controlled descent from elevated heights to the ground level. The mechanism works by adjusting the speed of descent based on the user's weight, ensuring a safe and steady evacuation. It's important to note the distinction between standard evacuation slides, which are designed for continuous use by multiple individuals, and simpler, single-use models.
The Anyang Fire Station has outlined a clear step-by-step procedure for the proper operation of an evacuation slide:
Secure Access: Begin by releasing and fully opening the safety latch on the window from which the evacuation will occur. Ensure the window provides a clear and unobstructed exit.
Mount the Support: Firmly install the designated support bracket for the evacuation slide onto the window frame or the designated anchor point. This support must be securely fastened to bear the weight of the user.
Connect and Secure: Attach the speed control unit and the hook of the evacuation slide to the installed support bracket. Crucially, ensure the hook is firmly in place and tighten any locking screws or mechanisms to prevent slippage.
Deploy the Rope: Carefully throw the reel or rope of the evacuation slide downwards, ensuring it reaches the ground without any significant obstructions or tangles.
Don the Harness: Securely wear the safety belt or harness provided with the evacuation slide. Ensure it is properly fitted around the body and tighten any adjusting straps or the fixing ring according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Controlled Descent: Once the harness is secure, carefully sit on the windowsill, facing outwards. Maintain a firm grip on any provided handles or straps and use your hands to gently push off the wall as you begin your descent. This helps to control your trajectory and prevent swinging.
To further enhance public understanding and proficiency in using these devices, the Anyang Fire Station is actively conducting hands-on evacuation slide experience programs at the Anyang 119 Safety Experience Center. These programs offer adult participants a safe environment to practice the correct usage procedures under the guidance of trained professionals.
Fire Chief Jang Jae-sung emphasized the critical importance of public awareness regarding evacuation slides. "In the event of a fire, an evacuation slide can be a vital lifeline, providing a crucial escape route when conventional exits are blocked," stated Chief Jang. "We strongly urge all residents in multi-story buildings to familiarize themselves with the location of evacuation slides in their buildings and to learn the correct usage procedures. Preparedness and knowledge can significantly increase the chances of survival in emergency situations."
The Anyang Fire Station's proactive educational efforts underscore their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community by empowering citizens with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively during fire emergencies.
