Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – In November 2025, the Earthshot Prize, a prestigious international environmental award aimed at discovering innovative environmental solutions and spreading urgent optimism worldwide, will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This marks the midpoint of the Earthshot Decade and is expected to be a significant milestone in global efforts to restore the planet.

Brazil is home to over half of the Amazon rainforest and an estimated one-fifth of the world's biodiversity, making it an ecological treasure trove. For this reason, Brazil stands at the center of international efforts to seek nature-based solutions for restoring the Earth. Following London, Boston, Singapore, and Cape Town, the awards ceremony in Rio will once again highlight 15 groundbreaking environmental solutions, with five winners in each category receiving £1 million each to scale their impact.

This year's Earthshot Prize will specifically spotlight the bold ideas and creativity emerging from Brazil, focusing on sharing the stories of community-led change across the five Earthshot categories with the world.

Brazil: Presenting a Blueprint for Nature Restoration

Forests, wetlands, lakes, and rivers hold significance beyond mere natural beauty. They are powerful tools for purifying air, absorbing atmospheric carbon, protecting biodiversity, and safeguarding vulnerable communities from the impacts of climate change. Few nations understand the power of nature-based solutions as well as Brazil.

Across Latin America, environmental leaders are promoting bold and innovative approaches to protect and restore crucial ecosystems like the Amazon, while simultaneously seeking to create local jobs and economic opportunities. In particular, Indigenous communities in Brazil and the wider region have been at the forefront of these efforts, playing a leading role.

2023 Earthshot Prize winner Acción Andina has driven large-scale forest restoration by planting nearly 10 million trees across five South American countries over the past decade. Additionally, the Amazon Sacred Headwaters Initiative, a 2024 Earthshot Prize finalist, is working to protect 86 million acres of vital rainforest while promoting sustainable livelihoods.

This year's Earthshot Prize aims to further amplify these voices and highlight their crucial role in safeguarding the health of the planet for both humanity and nature. It is expected that hosting the event in Brazil will further raise global awareness and engagement in environmental protection.
