Busan, South Korea – The city of Busan has announced plans to transform Igidae Park, a scenic coastal park known for its breathtaking views of the Oryukdo Islands, into a world-class art destination. The project, which will begin in March, aims to create a unique fusion of nature and art, attracting both local and international visitors.
The project will focus on three distinct zones: the International Art Center, the Seaside Forest Gallery, and the Oryukdo Art Center.
The International Art Center will be the centerpiece of the park, featuring a state-of-the-art art pavilion. The pavilion, slated for completion in 2026, will host exhibitions of world-class sculptures and art installations, serving as a landmark for the park.
The Seaside Forest Gallery will comprise 6-7 galleries showcasing the works of renowned domestic and international artists. The galleries will be developed through a public-private partnership, with the city inviting artists to submit proposals for their own museums.
The Oryukdo Art Center will serve as the gateway to the art park, offering visitors a variety of amenities, including a "Stone Street" displaying Korean stone artifacts and a wooden observation deck providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The observation deck is expected to be completed by 2028.
To ensure the success of the project, the city has appointed an advisory board of experts in architecture, design, and art. The board includes renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick, known for his innovative and sustainable designs. The board will provide guidance on the park's development, programming, and selection of artists.
Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "We will create a world-class art park that showcases the unique beauty of Igidae and attracts visitors from around the globe." The city plans to work closely with experts and the public to realize this vision.
The transformation of Igidae Park into a world-class art destination is expected to enhance Busan's cultural landscape and solidify its position as a leading tourist destination in Asia.
