DAEJEON — How did scholars of Korea's Joseon Dynasty navigate the journey of life, from childhood education to high government office? A unique exhibition opening today at the Daejeon Museum of Art and History invites visitors to explore these historical footsteps through a captivating lens: a traditional board game.
Running until March 31, 2027, the special exhibition titled "Joseon Scholar's Life Game" traces the chronological milestones of a scholar's life using the museum’s curated collection of historical artifacts.
Rather than viewing historical figures through a rigid academic lens, the exhibition presents them as dynamic individuals who made choices and lived through the changing currents of their era.
Key Highlights of the Exhibition:
The Path to Prestige: Visitors can examine rare relics tied to the Gwageo (civil service examinations), the ultimate gateway to government office and social standing, alongside artifacts from traditional wedding ceremonies that symbolized family prosperity and lineage continuation.
Interactive History Through Play: A major highlight is the recreation of Seunggyeongdo-nori, a traditional forecasting board game historically used by children to learn about the intricate workings of the Joseon bureaucracy. Visitors can experience the game firsthand.
Museum Director Jung Pil-gu noted that the exhibition redefines the image of the Joseon scholar. By blending local Confucian heritage with engaging artifact stories, the exhibition aims to deepen public appreciation for Daejeon's rich historical and cultural landscape.
