NVIDIA to Invest Up to $100 Billion in OpenAI for AI Data Center Buildout

SAN FRANCISCO—NVIDIA, the world's largest artificial intelligence chipmaker, announced a landmark strategic partnership with OpenAI to invest up to $100 billion to build the AI startup's next-generation data centers and power infrastructure. The collaboration, which unites two of the most influential companies in the AI industry, is aimed at accelerating the race toward superintelligence.

On Monday, the companies signed a letter of intent to deploy a massive system of at least 10 gigawatts (GW) to support the training and operation of OpenAI's future models. The multi-billion dollar investment from NVIDIA will be a phased commitment, beginning with an initial $10 billion to support the first 1 GW of computing power. This initial phase is expected to be deployed in the second half of 2026 and will be based on NVIDIA's next-generation "Vera Rubin" AI chip platform.

"This investment and partnership signify the next leap forward—deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence," said Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the critical role of computing infrastructure in the future economy. "Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we're building with NVIDIA to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale," he stated. Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, echoed this sentiment, adding that the partnership will help "push back the frontier of intelligence and scale the benefits of this technology to everyone."

As part of the agreement, OpenAI has named NVIDIA as a preferred strategic partner for its computing and networking needs. The two companies will work together to co-optimize OpenAI's model and infrastructure software with NVIDIA's hardware and software. This partnership complements OpenAI's existing global AI infrastructure initiatives with collaborators like Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and the Stargate project.

With over 700 million monthly active users, OpenAI's services are rapidly expanding among businesses, developers, and consumers. This monumental investment is seen as a pivotal moment in the global competition to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), cementing the roles of both companies at the forefront of the AI revolution.
