Applications accepted until May 14th; aims to strengthen regional industrial competitiveness by discovering outstanding skilled technicians

Daejeon, South Korea - Daejeon Metropolitan City has officially announced the commencement of the application period for its prestigious 'Master Craftsman' designation for the year 2025. Beginning on May 1st and continuing until May 14th, the city is actively seeking highly skilled technicians who have demonstrated exceptional proficiency and a significant contribution to their respective fields. This initiative underscores Daejeon's commitment to strengthening its regional industrial competitiveness by recognizing and supporting seasoned professionals who drive technological advancement.

The 'Master Craftsman' program aims to identify and honor individuals who possess a deep understanding and mastery of their craft. This year's selection process will encompass an extensive range of 38 fields and 92 distinct job categories, reflecting the diverse industrial landscape of the region. Notably, the categories include critical areas such as mechanical design, mold making, and the burgeoning field of material development, highlighting the city's focus on innovation and advanced manufacturing. Authorities anticipate selecting up to one Master Craftsman per job title, with a maximum of three individuals being recognized in total for the 2025 cohort.

The recognition bestowed upon these Master Craftsmen extends beyond mere accolades. Each selected individual will receive an official certificate and a distinguished Master Craftsman plaque, symbolizing their exceptional achievements. Furthermore, in a tangible demonstration of the city's commitment to these skilled professionals, each Master Craftsman will be granted an annual incentive of KRW 3 million for a period of five years, culminating in a total financial support of KRW 15 million. This financial backing aims to further empower these experts in their continued pursuit of excellence and innovation within their respective industries.

Stringent eligibility criteria have been established to ensure that the 'Master Craftsman' designation is awarded to the most deserving candidates. Applicants must possess a minimum of 15 years of practical experience within the same field and specific job category in an industrial setting. Moreover, they must demonstrate an exceptionally high level of technical proficiency and provide evidence of their significant contributions to the technological development of their field. To ensure local impact, applicants must have resided in Daejeon for at least five years and be currently employed at a business located within the city limits as of the public announcement date. It is important to note that individuals who have already been recognized as a Korea Master Craftsman or a Master Craftsman in another city or province are not eligible to apply for this Daejeon-specific designation.

The application process is structured to ensure a thorough and credible evaluation of candidates. Prospective applicants are required to consult the official announcement on the Daejeon City Hall website (www.daejeon.go.kr). Following this, their applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from one of the following entities: the head of their local district (Gu), the head of the Korea Industrial Manpower Agency's Daejeon regional headquarters, the head of a company operating within Daejeon, or the head of a relevant industry association. The completed application package must then be submitted to the Job Support Team within the Job and Economy Policy Division at Daejeon City Hall.

Kwon Kyung-min, the Director of Daejeon Metropolitan City's Economic Affairs Bureau, emphasized the significance of the program, stating, "We are committed to elevating the status of our skilled technicians and fostering the growth of our regional industries. To achieve this, we will ensure a fair and transparent selection process to identify and honor the most exemplary Master Craftsmen."

Since its inception in 2019, the Daejeon 'Master Craftsman' program has successfully recognized a diverse array of talent across various sectors. To date, a total of 16 Master Craftsmen have been selected across 11 job categories within 8 broader fields. These esteemed individuals represent the pinnacle of skill in areas such as automobile maintenance, fashion design, stone craftsmanship, wood and lacquer craftsmanship, seal engraving, floral decoration, cosmetology, culinary arts, baking and confectionery, ceramic art, and boiler maintenance. This track record demonstrates the city's ongoing commitment to acknowledging and supporting the invaluable contributions of its skilled workforce.

The 2025 'Master Craftsman' recruitment drive signifies Daejeon's continued investment in its human capital and its dedication to fostering a vibrant and competitive industrial ecosystem. By recognizing and rewarding excellence in skilled trades, the city aims to inspire future generations of technicians and further solidify its position as a hub for innovation and technical expertise. The program not only provides financial incentives and recognition but also elevates the social standing of skilled workers, highlighting their crucial role in the region's economic prosperity. As the application period commences, anticipation builds to see which exceptional individuals will be honored as Daejeon's newest Master Craftsmen, carrying the mantle of expertise and contributing to the city's ongoing industrial advancement.
