WASHINGTON D.C. – The star power of American sports royalty will be on full display tonight as the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to take place at the massive Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The event, scheduled for Friday, December 5 (local time), will feature current and former superstars from the four major U.S. professional sports leagues, joining global football figures to determine the group stages for the expanded 48-nation tournament.

US Legends Take Center Stage

The proceedings will be bolstered by an impressive lineup of non-football luminaries. According to the Associated Press (AP), the assisting draw personnel includes some of the biggest names in American athletic history:

Tom Brady: The legendary quarterback who won seven Super Bowls in the NFL.
Shaquille O'Neal: The dominant "Diesel" center from the NBA.
Aaron Judge: One of the current era's premier sluggers in MLB, representing the New York Yankees.
Wayne Gretzky: The undisputed "Great One" and legend of the NHL.
These icons will share the stage with figures from the football world, notably Rio Ferdinand, the former star defender for the English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United, who is well-known to Korean fans.

Hosts, Performers, and a Presidential Presence

The high-profile event will be co-hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum and actor/comedian Kevin Hart, ensuring a blend of celebrity and humor guides the crucial draw.

The night will also feature a memorable set of performances. The iconic group Village People, famous for the track "YMCA" (which also serves as an exit song for President Donald Trump’s rallies), and world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli are slated to perform.

Adding a significant political layer to the evening, President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the ceremony. Many observers anticipate that he will be presented with the newly established "FIFA Peace Prize" during the course of the draw ceremony.

The New Era: 48 Teams and South Korea's Position

The 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19 next year, marks a historic expansion. For the first time, the tournament will feature 48 nations (up from the previous 32), divided into 12 groups of four teams each for the group stage.

The teams are segmented into four pots, each containing 12 countries. One team will be drawn from each pot to form a group. South Korea, currently ranked 22nd in the FIFA rankings, has been placed in Pot 2. The draw will be a pivotal moment, shaping the pathways of these 48 teams toward global football glory.
