[GLOBAL ECONOMIC TIMES]  Mr. Park (40), the main suspect in the so-called 'Seoul National University Deepfake (technology to create fake images and videos using artificial intelligence) incident', which created and distributed false videos using photos of dozens of women, including Seoul National University alumni, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the first trial. .

On the 30th, Seoul Central District Court Criminal Agreement Division 31 (Presiding Judge Park Jun-seok) sentenced Mr. Park, who was indicted on charges of violating the Act on Sexual Protection of Children and Adolescents (producing and distributing sexually exploitative materials), to 10 years in prison, the same as the prosecution sentence. The other main culprit, Mr. Kang, was sentenced to four years in prison. The court also ordered them each to complete an 80-hour sexual violence treatment program and to be restricted from employment at facilities related to children, adolescents, and the disabled for five years.

Mr. Park and Mr. Kang are accused of producing false videos of 61 women, including 12 Seoul National University alumni, from July 2021 to last April and distributing them in Telegram chat rooms. Mr. Park delivered the victims' graduation photos and photos posted on social networking services (SNS) to Mr. Kang, and Mr. Kang created a video using deepfake technology. It was found that there were more than 2,000 false videos produced and distributed by them. Since the victims included minors, charges of violating the Child and Adolescent Sexual Protection Act were applied.

The court said, “The defendants selected the victims as if they were hunting, rented a virtual space called Telegram, and used extremely everyday photos to sexually insult and ridicule them over a long period of time, destroying their character,” adding, “The defendants say they are repentant, but the victims have already He stated the reason for sentencing, saying, “He suffered serious damage and it is difficult to recover from that damage.” Cho Yoon-hee, the victim's lawyer, said, "It is a positive ruling considering that the damage from the victim's perspective was very great."
