Busan, South Korea – The Lotte Giants continued their impressive run on Friday, defeating the Samsung Lions 3-1 at Sajik Baseball Stadium. The victory marked the Giants' third consecutive win, bringing them within two games of the league-leading Hanwha Eagles.

The match was the only KBO League game played across the country on a rain-affected evening, with a monsoon front impacting much of the peninsula. Lotte, now boasting a record of 40 wins, 3 draws, and 31 losses, solidifies their position in third place as they relentlessly pursue the top spot. Meanwhile, the Samsung Lions, who entered the day in fourth place, slipped to fifth following the loss, overtaken by the surging KIA Tigers.

Pitching Masterclass and Timely Hitting Seal the Win

Lotte's starting pitcher, Alex Gamboa, delivered a stellar performance, silencing the Lions' bats over six strong innings. He allowed just one run on four hits, including a solo home run, while striking out eight batters. This dominant outing earned Gamboa his fourth win of the season, showcasing his growing importance to the Giants' rotation. Following Gamboa, the bullpen tandem of Jung Hyun-soo, Jung Cheol-won, and closer Kim Won-jung each pitched a scoreless inning, demonstrating remarkable endurance and precision despite Jung Hyun-soo and Jung Cheol-won pitching on their third consecutive day. Samsung threatened in the top of the second when Kang Min-ho led off with a double to left field, eventually advancing to third with one out. In the bottom of the second, with two outs, Lotte's Kim Min-sung hit a single to right field, marking the team's first baserunner of the game. He was followed by Han Tae-yang, who drew a walk, setting the stage for Jeong Bo-geun. With runners on first and second, Jeong Bo-geun unleashed a deep double to left field that eluded the outfielders, bringing home both runners and giving Lotte an early 2-0 lead.

Lotte had another chance to extend their lead in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with two outs on a hit and a walk. However, Yoo Gang-nam's line drive was caught by center fielder Kim Sung-yoon, ending the threat and preventing the Giants from adding to their advantage.

As the rain intensified in the fifth inning, Samsung mounted a comeback attempt. Consecutive walks put runners on second and third with one out. The Lions sent pinch-hitter Yang Do-geun to the plate, whose ground ball initially led to a controversial double play call, with Park Byung-ho (on third) being judged to have interfered with the defense. However, after a lengthy review, the ruling was overturned, as it was determined that Park Byung-ho's interference was unintentional. In the bottom of the eighth, with one out, Jung Hoon launched a solo home run, his second of the season, providing a crucial insurance run and re-establishing Lotte's two-run advantage at 3-1.
