“Learn from China”: Hyundai Motor’s Top Brass Descend on Beijing Auto Show to Regain Edge

BEIJING – In a powerful display of strategic realignment, the top executive tier of Hyundai Motor Group made a high-profile appearance at the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2026) on Friday. The message from the leadership was singular and humbling: to compete globally, Hyundai must master the Chinese market and its world-leading mobility ecosystem.

A Convergence of Leadership
The Hyundai booth was a hub of corporate heavyweights. Jae-hoon Chang, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, was joined by Jose Muñoz, President and COO of Hyundai Motor Company, Min-woo Park, President of the Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division, and Manfred Harrer, Head of the R&D Division.

Their presence underscored a pivotal shift in Hyundai’s approach to the world’s largest auto market, which has rapidly evolved into the epicenter of autonomous driving, connectivity, and Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs).

"China is a market we must learn from and gain insights from," Vice Chairman Chang told reporters. "We are focusing on how to deploy the IONIQ brand here, starting with the Venus concept, but with a strategy that adapts to the unique pace of this market."

Forging Ties with Tech Giants
One of the most notable moments of the opening day was the meeting between Vice Chairman Chang and Zeng Yuqun, Chairman of CATL, the global battery leader. Hyundai, which already collaborates with CATL on battery technology, expressed a desire to deepen this partnership. Chang reportedly told Zeng that Hyundai is "learning a lot from China" and proposed even closer technical integration.

The group also highlighted its collaboration with Momenta, a leading Chinese autonomous driving startup. Hyundai’s new China-specific electric vehicle, the IONIQ V, features an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) developed in partnership with Momenta.

Min-woo Park, who previously held a high-ranking role at Nvidia, praised the local technology. "I have tested many Chinese autonomous systems since my time at Nvidia. The version integrated into the IONIQ V is among the most capable," Park noted. He added that while Hyundai aims to eventually internalize its autonomous software, leveraging China’s current ecosystem is vital for immediate competitiveness.

The IONIQ V: A Local Hero
The centerpiece of the exhibit was the world premiere of the IONIQ V, the production version of the 'Venus Concept' unveiled earlier this month. Designed specifically for Chinese consumers, the IONIQ V blends Hyundai’s global EV architecture with localized aesthetics and cutting-edge software features tailored to the tech-savvy local demographic.

Jose Muñoz emphasized that China remains Hyundai’s largest opportunity for growth. "China is not just the biggest market; it possesses the most advanced ecosystem for EVs and SDVs," Muñoz stated. "To secure global competitiveness, we must first secure our position here."

The Five-Year Roadmap
Hyundai’s renewed offensive includes a massive product rollout. The company announced plans to launch 20 new models in China over the next five years. This includes:

An additional all-electric SUV in the first half of next year.
The introduction of Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREV) to address range anxiety in vast territories.
Expansion of the electrified lineup into the mid-to-large segment.
Beyond hardware, Hyundai is pivoting toward a total localized strategy, which includes expanding local production, enhancing New Energy Vehicle (NEV) development, strengthening dealer networks, and localizing the entire supply chain to reduce costs and increase speed to market.

As the curtains rise on Auto China 2026, Hyundai’s massive executive presence serves as a clear signal to competitors and investors alike: the Korean automaker is no longer just observing the Chinese revolution—it is determined to lead it by integrating the very innovations that have made China a global powerhouse.
