Xiamen, China - The South Korean national badminton team, spearheaded by world No. 1 women's singles ace An Se-young (Samsung Life), has demonstrated formidable prowess by securing a clean sweep of the group stage at the BWF World Mixed Team Championships, also known as the Sudirman Cup.
Under the guidance of head coach Park Joo-bong, the Korean squad concluded their Group B campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory over Chinese Taipei on Wednesday in Xiamen, China. This triumph followed earlier comfortable 4-1 wins against both the Czech Republic and Canada in their opening two fixtures.
With a perfect record of three consecutive victories, Korea finished atop Group B, confidently advancing to the quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament.
The Sudirman Cup, a biennial event, features matches across all five badminton disciplines: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Each tie consists of these five matches, with the first team to win three matches declared the overall winner. Notably, all five matches are played to completion to determine the final score, even if one team has already secured the three necessary victories.
Korea initiated their final group stage encounter against Chinese Taipei with a strong performance in the mixed doubles. The formidable pair of Seo Seung-jae (Samsung Life) and Chae Yu-jung (Incheon International Airport) secured a swift 2-0 victory, setting a positive tone for the tie.
The momentum continued in the second match as the reigning queen of badminton, An Se-young, stepped onto the court. Displaying her world-class caliber, An convincingly defeated her opponent in straight games (2-0), extending Korea's lead to 2-0.
However, Chinese Taipei managed to pull back a point in the men's singles match, where Korea's Jeon Hyeok-jin (Seongnam City Hall) succumbed to a 0-2 defeat.
Any hopes of a Chinese Taipei comeback were swiftly extinguished by Korea's dominant doubles pairs. In the men's doubles, the world-renowned duo of Seo Seung-jae and Kim Won-ho (Samsung Life) showcased their exceptional teamwork and skill, clinching a hard-fought 2-1 victory. Following their lead, the equally formidable women's doubles pair of Lee So-hee and Baek Ha-na (Incheon International Airport) also secured a 2-1 win, sealing an emphatic 4-1 overall victory for South Korea.
This flawless group stage performance underscores Korea's strength and depth across all badminton disciplines. The team's cohesive blend of experienced world-beaters like An Se-young and Seo Seung-jae, alongside other highly skilled players, positions them as a strong contender for the Sudirman Cup title.
The quarterfinals draw will be highly anticipated, as Korea looks to maintain their winning momentum against other top-performing nations from the group stage. With An Se-young in scintillating form and their doubles pairs proving to be a consistent source of victories, the Korean team will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with in the knockout rounds. Their dominant showing in the group stage serves as a clear message to their rivals that Korea is a serious contender for the coveted Sudirman Cup trophy. The badminton world will be watching closely to see if they can translate their group stage success into ultimate victory.
