Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI model that delivers performance comparable to ChatGPT at a low cost, has garnered significant attention both domestically and internationally. Despite shocking the world with the launch of DeepSeek, he has maintained a low profile. However, Chinese media outlets have hailed Liang Wenfeng as a "genius born in China" and have recently been reporting on his daily life and past endeavors.
According to reports from Nanfang Metropolis Daily and other media outlets in Guangdong Province, Liang Wenfeng visited his hometown of Wuchuan, Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province during the Chinese New Year. The village was adorned with red banners that read, "Warmly welcome your return," "The hometown is proud of you," and "Liang Wenfeng's success is a new driving force for rural development." Even a giant balloon sign, commonly used in festivals, appeared, and tourists were seen taking commemorative photos.
It is reported that Liang Wenfeng stayed in his hometown around January 29th, the Lunar New Year's Day. He reportedly told his acquaintances that he wanted to spend the Spring Festival quietly, even if he went home.
Liang Wenfeng has rarely made public appearances such as interviews or lectures. Despite his recognition in the industry, he is a figure about whom it is difficult to find even a single publicly available photo online. As a result, his participation in a symposium with AI industry representatives, chaired by Premier Li Qiang on the 20th, has recently become a hot topic.
People around Liang Wenfeng, including his classmates, say that he was quiet from an early age and excelled in mathematics. Rong, his middle school homeroom teacher, said, "Liang Wenfeng had already finished high school mathematics in middle school and studied university-level mathematics. He had excellent mathematical thinking skills." He added, "He was quiet but not a bookworm, and he had his own way of studying."
Chen, a high school classmate, said, "Liang Wenfeng liked experimental subjects and loved soccer." He added, "After starting his own business, he showed a constant spirit of inquiry while developing products such as fully automatic embroidery machines." A former colleague who worked with Liang Wenfeng told the Financial Times, "He was an eccentric with a terrible hairstyle and talked about building a cluster of 10,000 chips." He added, "At that time, I didn't take his story seriously."
Born in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province in 1985, Liang Wenfeng is a domestically trained Chinese technology talent. He entered middle school at the age of 11 and went on to study computer science at the prestigious Zhejiang University at the age of 17. In 2010, Liang Wenfeng published a master's thesis on improving intelligent tracking algorithms for AI surveillance cameras.
