MIAMI, FL – A Red Flag Fire Warning was issued across almost all of southern Florida on Saturday, April 12th, local time. The National Weather Service (NWS Miami) warned of dangerous fire weather conditions due to dry conditions and strong winds, which could lead to rapidly spreading fires.
The Red Flag Fire Warning includes Miami-Dade and Broward counties and is in effect until 7 PM. Monroe, Palm Beach, and Collier counties are also under the Red Flag Fire Warning.
While Red Flag Fire Warnings are not uncommon, southern Florida has seen several fire-related alerts in the past month, including a large brush fire in southern Miami-Dade County that burned over 26,000 acres. That fire took several days to fully extinguish, and portions of US-1, the 18-mile stretch leading to Card Sound Road and the Florida Keys, were intermittently closed.
Dry Air, Strong Winds, and High Temperatures Combine… "Even a Small Spark Could Spread into a Large Fire"
The current Red Flag Fire Warning is a result of a combination of dry air, strong gusts, and warm temperatures. According to the National Weather Service, northwest winds are expected to be between 10 to 15 miles per hour, with relative humidity potentially dropping as low as 20%. Temperatures are also forecast to rise to around 82 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 28 degrees Celsius).
The National Weather Service warned that any fires that ignite on Saturday afternoon could spread rapidly and become uncontrollable. As a result, outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid any activities that could create flames or sparks. This warning supersedes the previously issued Fire Weather Watch.
In a statement, the National Weather Service said, "A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. 1 A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior."
Experts Warn "Minor Carelessness Could Lead to Irreversible Disaster… Extreme Caution Needed"
Weather experts point out that the persistent dry weather combined with strong winds creates a very dangerous situation where even a small spark could quickly escalate into a large wildfire. There is particular concern that the recent series of wildfires in southern Florida has left a large amount of dry leaves and brush, which could further accelerate the spread of any new fires.
In response, fire authorities are urging residents to: ▲ Completely extinguish and dispose of cigarette butts in designated areas ▲ Refrain from outdoor burning as much as possible, and if unavoidable, clear the surrounding area of flammable materials and have firefighting equipment readily available ▲ Exercise caution when using equipment that can create sparks, such as chainsaws and lawnmowers. They also emphasized that in the event of a fire, residents should immediately call 911 and evacuate to a safe area quickly if initial attempts to extinguish the fire are unsuccessful.
Until the Red Flag Fire Warning is lifted, residents of southern Florida will need to remain vigilant about fire prevention and exercise extreme caution to prevent irreversible disasters caused by minor carelessness.
