Paraguayan Shipbuilding Industry Foresees 'Golden Future' Over Next 20 Years, Expecting $800 Million Economic Impact

The Paraguayan shipbuilding industry is poised to become a key driver of Paraguay's economic growth, generating nearly $800 million in economic impact over the next 20 years. According to a joint study by the Center for Economic Studies of the Paraguayan Industrial Union (CEE) and the Paraguayan Naval Industry Association (CINAVAL), Paraguay is expected to achieve remarkable growth in the shipbuilding sector, driven by the replacement of aging vessels and increased new demand.

Replacement of Aging Vessels and Increased New Demand Driving Shipbuilding Growth

The report predicts that half of Paraguay's vessels will require repair or replacement in the coming years, and an additional 268 barges per year will be needed by 2041. This means an addition of 2,500 barges to Paraguay's current barge inventory, which will act as a key factor driving the growth of the shipbuilding industry.

Synergy Effect with Metal Industry, Expected Increase in Production and Job Creation

While more than half of Paraguay's metal industry's current facility capacity is idle, it is expected that new production investments to meet the increasing demand for vessels will enable the production of 150 to 200 barges per year. This will revitalize the metal industry along with the growth of the shipbuilding industry and is expected to create more than 2,000 new jobs.

Government's Active Support and Increased Investment, Accelerating Leap to South American Logistics Hub

The Paraguayan government is providing various policy supports to foster the shipbuilding industry and is actively attracting foreign investment. The recently announced maritime industry modernization plan demonstrates the government's strong commitment to improving Paraguay's maritime infrastructure and making Paraguay a maritime hub in the South American region. According to the Paraguayan Chamber of River and Maritime Shipowners (CAFyM), the investment scale in this sector amounts to approximately $3 billion, which will serve as a solid foundation supporting the bright future of the Paraguayan shipbuilding industry.

Paraguay Rises as South American Logistics Center

Paraguay is located in the center of South American inland waterways, and the volume of logistics transportation through the Paraná-Paraguay waterway is steadily increasing. As major export items such as soybeans, corn, beef, and timber are mainly transported by barges, the shipbuilding industry will play an increasingly important role in the Paraguayan economy.
