The Rise of 'K-Eyewear Tourism': Foreign Visitors Flock to South Korea for Quick, Affordable Spectacles

A burgeoning travel trend, dubbed "K-Eyewear Tourism," is sweeping across South Korea, with a growing number of international visitors adding bespoke eyeglass shopping to their itineraries. Data from a major inbound tourism platform reveals a massive surge in demand, highlighting the country's optical shops as a new, must-visit destination.

According to Createrip, a domestic inbound tourism platform, the transaction value for eyewear shop products between June and October of this year saw a staggering increase of approximately 1,608% compared to the preceding five months (January to May). This exponential growth underscores the rapid adoption of this niche shopping experience among foreign travelers.

The appeal of K-Eyewear Tourism is broad, attracting visitors from diverse global regions, including Asia, North America, and Europe. The United States leads the reservation statistics, accounting for about 49% of all bookings, followed by Taiwan at approximately 26%, and Germany at around 9%. This geographical diversity suggests that the factors driving this trend are universally appealing.

More significantly, tourists are increasingly bundling their eyeglass appointments with other sightseeing activities. Optical shops located near major tourist hubs, such as Myeongdong in Seoul, are seeing a high rate of co-bookings, with around 44% of reservations for Myeongdong-based opticians being made alongside other tour packages. This integration into the broader travel experience solidifies the concept of "eyewear tourism" as a core component of a South Korean trip.

Speed and Price: The Winning Formula

Createrip analysts point to two key factors fueling the popularity of Korean optical shops: unmatched speed and superior price competitiveness.

In many home countries, getting a new pair of prescription glasses—from eye examination to final product—can take several days. In stark contrast, Korean opticians pride themselves on completing the entire process, including eye exams and manufacturing, in as little as 30 minutes to an hour. This rapid, on-demand service is a major draw for tourists operating on tight schedules.

Furthermore, South Korea offers significant price advantages. Foreign visitors can acquire high-quality eyeglasses at a cost substantially lower than in their home countries, making the trip an economically sensible choice for a necessary purchase.

Eyewear as a Fashion Statement

Beyond practicality and price, the local industry's keen focus on contemporary fashion trends also contributes to the rising demand. Tourists view Korean-made eyewear not just as a vision correction tool but as a sought-after fashion accessory. They are drawn to the unique and diverse styles and designs that are often unavailable or difficult to find in their own countries. This perception shift—from medical necessity to high-quality, trendy souvenir—enhances the overall shopping appeal.

"A visit to an optical shop is transcending simple shopping and establishing itself as a unique Korean travel experience for foreign tourists," commented Lim Hye-min, CEO of Createrip. She added that following the success of the beauty and medical tourism sectors, the focus is now on making eyewear shops a "must-do" itinerary item. The company plans to concentrate its efforts on improving reservation convenience and providing tangible benefits to further cement the position of K-Eyewear Tourism in the global travel market. The rapid service, competitive pricing, and fashionable designs have combined to turn a routine chore into an exciting and essential part of the modern South Korean travel adventure.
