Helsinki, Finland – Just as Finns began to embrace the early signs of spring, winter has dramatically reasserted itself, blanketing much of the country in heavy snow and creating hazardous travel conditions. A sudden shift in weather patterns has brought significant snowfall, particularly affecting central and eastern Finland, where up to 20 centimeters of snow has accumulated since Sunday night.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued widespread warnings urging motorists to exercise extreme caution. "The snowfall is dense, and in addition to snow accumulating on the roads, large flakes significantly reduce visibility," explained meteorologist Elina Suorsa. The heavy, wet snow, described by meteorologist Tuukka Keränen as "slushy and heavy," has made roads exceptionally slippery, leading to increased risks of accidents and travel delays.

This abrupt return to winter follows an unseasonably warm weekend that saw temperatures in southern Finland climb above 10°C. However, a surge of cold air from the north has caused temperatures to plummet, bringing freezing conditions across the country. "Spring is taking a break," Suorsa stated, "Temperatures will drop below freezing across most of the country, with Lapland experiencing particularly cold nights."

The FMI has warned that roads and pedestrian pathways will become icy overnight, further compounding the already challenging travel conditions. As the snow moves eastward, the colder air mass will solidify the precipitation, creating treacherous surfaces.

The cold spell is expected to persist throughout the week, with nighttime temperatures in Lapland potentially dropping below -25°C, and some areas possibly reaching -30°C. Daytime temperatures will hover around freezing in the south and remain below zero in central and northern Finland.

"The cold spell will continue for at least a week, and there is still uncertainty about whether another snow system could bring more precipitation later in the week," said meteorologist Joanna Rinne. This prolonged period of winter weather necessitates that residents remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

The sudden return of winter serves as a stark reminder of Finland's variable climate and the importance of staying informed about weather conditions. Residents are advised to monitor FMI updates and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
