American pop star Katy Perry and businesswoman Lauren Sánchez, fiancée of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, were among six women who successfully completed a historic suborbital spaceflight with an all-female crew. They journeyed into space aboard the New Shepard rocket of Blue Origin, the space exploration company founded by Bezos.
Launched on April 14th (local time) at 8:30 AM from West Texas, USA, the New Shepard rocket ascended to an altitude of over 100 km for approximately 10 minutes before returning to Earth. The fully automated rocket took off vertically, and after the capsule separated mid-flight, it landed safely with the aid of parachutes and retro-rockets.
This flight holds significant meaning as the first all-female space mission since Soviet cosmonaut and engineer Valentina Tereshkova's historic solo spaceflight in 1963.
Joining Katy Perry and Lauren Sánchez on this historic flight were Gayle King, co-host of CBS Mornings; Amanda Nguyen, a research scientist; Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist; and Kerianne Flynn, a film producer.
Blue Origin has been offering space tourism services through its New Shepard rocket since 2021, and this mission marks its 11th suborbital flight and the first with an all-female crew. The price of Blue Origin's space tourism tickets has not been disclosed.
In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Katy Perry explained her participation in the spaceflight, stating it was "to inspire my daughter Daisy to dream without limits." She expressed her hope that this experience would encourage her daughter to grow into someone bold who believes in limitless possibilities.
During the flight, the six female passengers crossed the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space at an altitude of 100 km above sea level. This allowed them to experience a brief period of weightlessness and witness the curvature of the Earth with their own eyes, creating a truly special moment.
To date, Blue Origin has sent a total of 52 people to suborbital space through 10 crewed missions. Notable figures who have previously flown on the New Shepard include William Shatner, the legendary actor from the SF movie Star Trek series, and Jeff Bezos himself. Bezos participated in the first crewed launch to demonstrate its safety.
Jeff Bezos is engaged in fierce competition with Virgin Galactic, which also provides suborbital spaceflight services. Virgin Galactic has also successfully conducted suborbital flights with celebrities on board, intensifying the competition in the space tourism market.
However, Blue Origin's ambitions extend beyond suborbital flights, aiming to enter the orbital flight market and compete with SpaceX, led by the world's wealthiest person, Elon Musk. To this end, Blue Origin successfully conducted the first uncrewed orbital flight of its much more powerful launch vehicle, New Glenn, in January, demonstrating its technological prowess.
The success of this historic all-female suborbital flight carries significance for Blue Origin beyond mere space tourism. It is seen as opening a new chapter in space exploration in line with the contemporary emphasis on diversity and inclusion, and it is expected to encourage more women to participate in space exploration in the future. Furthermore, it reaffirms Blue Origin's technological capabilities and safety, potentially giving the company a favorable position in the upcoming orbital flight market competition.
