LG Electronics is accelerating its push into emerging markets known as the "Global South," particularly India and Brazil, by scaling up localized product offerings and regional production ecosystems. Rather than relying on simple exports, the company is embedding local lifestyle traits and environmental conditions into product development while fortifying on-the-ground manufacturing bases. This strategy aims to diversify LG's business portfolio by turning the Global South into a pivotal new growth engine.
In India, the local subsidiary recently unveiled a new lineup of semi-automatic washing machines tailored specifically to the regional consumer base. The newly introduced appliances feature enhanced durability, reinforced glass lids, and user-friendly control panels. To address typical washing challenges in the region, the products incorporate high-powered water currents designed to effectively remove stubborn stains and optimize rinsing performance. Furthermore, integrated features utilize strong airflow to reduce drying times and incorporate lint filters to ensure cleaner garment maintenance.
This rollout represents a prime example of hyper-localization catering to India’s unique domestic environment and consumer preferences. Previously, LG introduced its India-exclusive "Essential Series," which included washing machines, air conditioners, and refrigerators calibrated to local purchasing power and lifestyles. The new semi-automatic washing machine collection continues this trend, prioritizing tangible performance upgrades in everyday household conditions.
In Brazil, LG is broadening its localization scope by establishing direct regional manufacturing operations. The company recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art home appliance production plant in Paraná, Brazil. Backed by an investment of approximately 1.5 billion Brazilian real, the facility boasts an annual production capacity of roughly 600,000 refrigerators, churning out one unit every 14 seconds. The plant integrates advanced smart factory infrastructure, including AI-powered vision inspection systems and industrial robots.
The facility's inaugural locally manufactured product is the "Duplex B472" refrigerator, engineered specifically for Brazilian consumers. It natively supports Brazil's dual-voltage environment of 127V and 220V and is optimized for local dietary lifestyles and tropical climate conditions. Local production is projected to reduce import reliance while cutting supply chain lead times by up to 80%. Over the mid-to-long term, LG plans to leverage this hub not only for domestic consumption in Brazil but also as a strategic export base spanning the wider Latin American region.
Complementing these efforts, LG is pursuing tailored strategies in other key regions such as Saudi Arabia, where it is expanding Business-to-Business and Business-to-Government opportunities linked to national development initiatives. Recognizing the high growth potential of the Global South, LG has formally designated these areas as core growth drivers. In February of this year, the company selected India, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil as primary strategic markets, setting an ambitious target to double their combined revenues by 2030. Last year, the aggregate revenue from these three nations reached 6.2 trillion won, marking a robust growth of over 20% compared to 2023—more than double the rate of LG’s overall corporate revenue growth during the same period.
Industry observers note that LG's approach views the Global South far beyond a simple retail market, transforming it into an integrated ecosystem encompassing localized product R&D, manufacturing, distribution, and strategic business partnerships.
